Soumendu Roy

Soumendu Roy
Soumendu Roy (1933-2023) was an Indian cinematographer, best known for his extensive collaboration with auteur Satyajit Ray. Between 1960 and 1984, he collaborated with Ray on 21 feature films, four documentaries, and one short film. Known for his masterful use of natural light and dynamic composition, he won four National Film Awards for Best Cinematography for Ashani Sanket (1973), Sonar Kella (1974), Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977), and the 1993 documentary Suchitra Mitra. He started his career as a camera assistant in the mid-1950s, training under masters such as Subrata Mitra, known for his collaboration with Ray on The Apu Trilogy (1955-1959). Roy was credited as assistant cinematographer in all three films in the trilogy. He also worked on Ritwik Ghatak's groundbreaking film, Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) as an assistant cinematographer. His debut project as a lead cinematographer was Ray's documentary, Rabindranath Tagore (1961). Following this, his long collaboration with Ray began with Teen Kanya (1961), and he went on to shoot iconic films like Aranyer Din Ratri (1969), Pratidwandi (1970), Ashani Sanket (1973), Sonar Kella (1974), Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977), and Ghare Baire (1984). In Aranyer Din Ratri (1969), he used natural lighting to elevate the characters' introspective journeys. In Ashani Sanket (1973), he used subdued tones and silhouettes to depict the devastation and suffering in the aftermath of the 1943 Bengal Famine. Similarly, in Pratidwandi (1970), through dynamic framing and on-location shooting, Roy captured the chaotic energy of a rapidly modernizing 1960s Calcutta. Roy understood Ray's vision of realist cinema, and therefore prioritized natural lighting, extended long takes, and precise framings to define a consistent visual style of the auteur. His contributions to the visual language of cinematography, emphasizing naturalistic lighting and compositional depth, set the standard for Indian art cinema. His innovative techniques, such as diffused bounce lighting and precise framing, developed during his collaborations with Satyajit Ray, inspired generations of cinematographers to create visuals that complement the narrative without stylistic excesses.
