Teen Kanya (Three Daughters), 1961, India, Bengali
Scene Description A chariot for the Hindu god Jagannath is parked at the riverside. Mrinmoyee keeps her caged chipmunk inside it. The riverside, the chariot, the chipmunk and the swing are an extended metaphor for Mrinmoyee's childhood. She is still deeply attached to these things and considerably wet behind the ears, despite her age. Her childhood was swept away by the flood, and she has bought herself some time to grow up by choosoig to frolic in the outdoors instead of entering a wedlock. (2/7)
