Film Title

Teen Kanya (Three Daughters), 1961, India, Bengali

Scene Description Mrinmoyee is a whimsical village girl who possesses none of the qualities that receives adulation. She roams free, climbs trees, loves her little chipmunk Chorki and makes play with the local boys. For such 'disparate' behaviour and rugged appearence, so unlike the other girls of her age, everyone calls her paagli or the mad-girl. Mrinmoyee has taken refuge in the village with her mother. Her real home has been swept in a flood. Her father hasn't come back to the family. Amulya is attracted to her. He declares that he will marry no one but Mrinmoyee, His mother is at a loss, as she is the most unusual choice for a bride but she is afraid of losing her obstinate son. She calls Mrinmoyee to her room and asks about her life. It is disclosed that Mrinmoyee is no alien to housekeeping, she knows all the chores, the skills cooking, cleaning and the likes. Once she's free of her duties, she like to roam free. Amulya's mother tells her she cannot do that 'here'. Mrinmoyee who is unaware of Amulya's intentions, doesn't understand what to make of the banal conversation. (3/7)
