Film Title

Teen Kanya (Three Daughters), 1961, India, Bengali

Scene Description On the night of her wedding to Amulya, Mrinmoyee protests to the marriage. The wedding was Amulya's wish and his alone. Being a girl, and poor at that, she did not have a say. Her mother has sipphoned her away wishing her a better life. But for Mrinmoyee, her freedom of choice, her choice to live carefree and unbounded takes precedence over everything else. Amulya understands her grievances and doesn't dismiss them like everyone else does by calling her a crude little fool. He considers her mature enough to make her choices, which is a refreshing first for her. Once Amulya is asleep, she escapes the house and reaches the riverfront to find her chipmunk, Chorki in the cage. It has been days since she fed him. She spends the night sleeping on the swing. Meanwhile, Amulya and his whole house is in an uproar about the renegade bride. (4/7)
