Ray, considered the master of the moving image turned his lens towards a living legend, Tanjore Balasaraswati, or simply, Bala in the thirty-three-minute documentary, a collaborative offering by the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Government of Tamil Nadu, immortalizes the spirit and artistry of India's most revered Bharatanatyam dancer. Ray's connection with Bala was not born of commission, but of reverence. At just fourteen, he had glimpsed her dance in Calcutta in 1935. She was seventeen then, already radiant with a power that transcended age, language, and form. Bala is a documentary made by Satyajit Ray in 1976 about the Bharatnatyam dancer Bala Saraswathi, fondly known as Bala. The documentary features the life and some of the works of the dancer in form of narration and dance. Originally conceived in 1966, the film was eventually mad in 1976, prior to which the revolutionary dancer had never been filmed before. The dancer wore the same pair on anklets for the film which she had worn 50 years ago for her debut performance.
