Introduction

Zeenat Aman (19 November 1951) She is an Indian actress and model who rose to prominence in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, establishing herself as one of the highest-paid actresses of her era and a media-recognized sex symbol. Hailed for her individualistic iconic screen presence, Aman appeared in Box Office India's “Top Actresses” list eight times between 1974 and 1981 and, in 2022, was ranked among Outlook India's “75 Best Bollywood Actresses.” A trendsetter radiating timeless allure, and blending bold sensuality with effortless sophistication, she is a true style queen, who set trends in fashion and glamour, leaving an indelible mark on Bollywood and beyond.

Born Zeenat Khan in Bombay to Pathan Muslim screenwriter Amanullah Khan and Maharashtrian Hindu Scinda Heinz, Aman was the cousin of actor Raza Murad and niece of actor Murad. Her father, who penned classics such as Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Pakeezah (1972), wrote under the pen name “Aman,” later adopted by Zeenat as her screen name. Following her parents' divorce and the death of her father when she was thirteen, she completed schooling in Panchgani and briefly attended the University of Southern California before returning to India.

Aman first gained attention in 1970 as the runner-up in the Femina Miss India pageant, earning the title “First Princess,” and subsequently won the Miss Asia Pacific International pageant, becoming the first woman to hold both titles simultaneously. She debuted in films the same year with The Evil Within (1970), followed by minor roles in Hungama (1971) and Hulchul (1971), before achieving her breakthrough in Dev Anand's Haré Rama Haré Krishna (1971). Her portrayal of Jasbir/Janice earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award for Best Actress (Hindi).

Throughout the 1970s, Aman appeared in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Ajanabee (1974), Warrant (1975), Chori Mera Kaam (1975), Dharam Veer (1977), Chhailla Babu (1977), Hum Kisise Kum Naheen (1977), The Great Gambler (1979), and as Roma in Don (1978). Her performance in Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) garnered her first Filmfare Best Actress nomination.

In the early 1980s, she starred in Abdullah (1980), Alibaba Aur 40 Chor (1980), Qurbani (1980), Dostana (1980), and Insaf Ka Tarazu (1980), earning another Filmfare Best Actress nomination for the latter. Subsequent films included Laawaris (1981), Teesri Aankh (1982), Mahaan (1983), Pukar (1983), and Jagir (1984). After marrying actor Mazhar Khan in 1985, Aman reduced her screen appearances, returning with Bhopal Express (1999) and later Boom (2003). She continued performing in independent films such as Ugly Aur Pagli (2008), Dunno Y... Na Jaane Kyon (2010), Chaurahen (2012), Strings of Passion (2014), Dunno Y2... Life Is a Moment (2015), Dil Toh Deewana Hai (2016), Sallu Ki Shaadi (2017), and the war epic Panipat (2019).

Recognized with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025, Aman's personal life included marriages to Sanjay Khan (1978–1979) and Mazhar Khan (1985–1998), with whom she has two sons, Azaan and Zahaan. Her enduring legacy as a trailblazing actress, model, and cultural icon continues to influence generations of Hindi cinema.
