Introduction

Roti Kapada Aur Makaan is a potent exploration of poverty, inequality, and the struggles of India's working class. Written, produced and directed by Manoj Kumar, the film also features him in his recurring role of Bharat Kumar, a model Indian citizen who stands up against injustice. Drawing its title from Indira Gandhi's popular slogan, the film reflects on the systemic issues plaguing Indian society, particularly the inability of the government to adequately provide basic necessities- bread, clothing, and shelter.

The film follows Bharat (Manoj Kumar), a young and educated engineer unable to find work despite his qualifications. His personal struggle reflects a larger national crisis: the alarming rise of unemployment in India during the 1970s. Bharat's story is set against the backdrop of an India grappling with deepening inequality, exacerbated by corrupt individuals like Nekiram (Madan Puri), who exploit the black market to hoard essential supplies. Rather than outright blaming the state, the film critiques those who capitalise on the broken system.

Released just one year before the declaration of the Emergency, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan resonated deeply with audiences for voicing the frustrations of the common man. With memorable songs like Mehengai Mar Gayi, which was also banned by Indira Gandhi during the Emergency period as it criticised the growing inflation, the film underscores financial crises and mounting social pressures, making it one of the most socially conscious films of the era.

रोटी कपड़ा और मकान गरीबी और असमानता के दंश से जूझते भारत के कामकाजी वर्ग के संघर्षों की कहानी पूरी नाटकीयता के साथ कहती है। फ़िल्म के लेखक, निर्माता और निर्देशक मनोज कुमार हैं और अन्याय के खिलाफ़ खड़े होनेवाले एक आदर्श भारतीय नागरिक की भूमिका निभाते हुए उन्होंने फिर से एक बार पर्दे पर 'भारत कुमार' को ज़िन्दा कर दिया है। तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री इंदिरा गांधी के लोकप्रिय नारे से अपनी फ़िल्म का शीर्षक लेते हुए यह फ़िल्म भारतीय समाज को मथ रही व्यवस्थागत ख़ामियों को निशाने पर लेती है। इसमें सबसे केन्द्रीय समस्या है किसी भी इंसान की रोटी, कपड़ा और सर पर छत जैसी बुनियादी ज़रूरतों को भी पूरा कर पाने में सरकार की असमर्थता।

फ़िल्म का नायक भारत (मनोज कुमार) एक युवा और सुशिक्षित इंजीनियर है जिसे अपनी तमाम योग्यताओं के बावजूद नौकरी नहीं मिल पा रही है। उसका व्यक्तिगत संघर्ष एक बड़े राष्ट्रीय संकट को दर्शाता है: 1970 के दशक में भारत में बेरोज़गार नवयुवकों की संख्या में हुई चिंताजनक बढोत्तरी। भारत की कहानी एक ऐसे भारत की तस्वीर पेश करती है जहाँ असमानता का साया बड़ा हो रहा है और नेकीराम (मदन पुरी) जैसे भ्रष्ट व्यापारी ज़रूरी सामानों की काला बाज़ारी कर व्यवस्था को और गैरबराबर बना रहे हैं। राज्य संस्था को सीधे तौर पर दोषी ठहराने के बजाए यह फ़िल्म उन लोगों को कटघरे मे खड़ा करती है जो इस पंगु व्यवस्था का अपने लाभ के लिए फ़ायदा उठाते हैं।

आपातकाल की घोषणा के एक साल पहले रिलीज़ हुई रोटी कपड़ा और मकान ने आम आदमी की बेबसी को आवाज़ दी और दर्शकों ने इसे खूब पसन्द किया। इस फ़िल्म में “महंगाई मार गई” जैसे समकालीन यथार्थ पर व्यंग्य करते बोलों से सजा गीत था, जिसे आपातकाल के दौर में इंदिरा गांधी की सत्ता ने बढ़ती महंगाई पर टिप्पणी करने के चलते प्रतिबंधित कर दिया था। जिस तरह यह फ़िल्म तत्कालीन वित्तीय संकटों और बढ़ते सामाजिक दबावों को दिखाती है वो इसे अपने दौर की सामाजिक रूप से सबसे सचेत फ़िल्मों में से एक बना देता है।
