Introduction
Deepti Naval (born 3 February 1952) is an Indian-American actress, filmmaker, writer, painter, photographer and novelist, best known for her influential presence in Hindi cinema. An American citizen, she was born in Amritsar, Punjab, and moved to New York in 1971 when her father accepted a teaching position at the City University of New York. Naval studied fine arts at Hunter College, an artistic foundation that would later inform her multidisciplinary career. She was married to filmmaker Prakash Jha, and the couple share an adopted daughter.
Naval made her screen debut in Shyam Benegal's Junoon (1978) and gained wider recognition with Ek Baar Phir (1980).
