Introduction

In 2006, one of the biggest questions in India's film industry was, "Can Shah Rukh Khan do justice to Don?" The biggest Bollywood superstar of the Aughts was stepping into the shoes of the biggest superstar of the 70s. This question caused such a furor because "Don”, both as a character and a film, held a special place in the hearts of many Bachchan fans.

The original film stars Bachchan in a double role: one as the titular Don, and the other as Vijay, a small-town, simple-minded man who takes Don's place after his demise. This switch occurs under police supervision to catch Don's accomplices red-handed. Zeenat Aman plays Roma, who seeks to avenge her brother's death at the hands of Don, unaware that it's actually Vijay she's trying to kill.

Don is special because it differs significantly from typical Bachchan films of the time, which were mostly masala films and social dramas. Instead, it's a genre film—an indigenous take on James Bond and Hollywood thriller films of the 60s. The movie features an exploding briefcase, a Bond-girle-sque character in Aman, and the favourite Indian staple of double roles, as Indian audiences can't get enough of their superstars.

Directed by Chandra Barot, Don could be interpreted as an outreach to urban audiences, satisfying their appetite for Bond films with a home-cooked meal. It successfully blended Hollywood-style thrills with distinctly Indian elements, creating a unique cinematic experience that has stood the test of time.

साल 2006 में हिन्दी फ़िल्मों की दुनिया में एक ही सवाल गूँज रहा था, “क्या शाहरुख़ खान डॉन के किरदार के साथ न्याय कर पाएंगे?” बड़ी बात तो थी, आखिर नब्बे के दशक का सबसे बड़ा बॉलीवुड सुपरस्टार सत्तर के दशक के सबसे बड़े सिनेमाई सितारे के जूते में पांव डालने जा रहा था। पर इस सवाल के इतना हंगामा मच देने की एक वजह ये भी थी कि “डॉन” ने एक किरदार और एक फ़िल्म दोनों ही रूप में अमिताभ बच्चन के चाहनेवालों के दिलों में एक ख़ास जगह बना रखी है।

मूल फ़िल्म में अमिताभ की दोहरी भूमिका है: एक डॉन के रूप में और दूसरी विजय के रूप में। विजय छोटे शहर से आया, सीधी सरल सोच रखनेवाला गंवई किस्म का इंसान है जिसे पुलिस की ओर से डॉन की मौत के बाद उसकी जगह लेने को भेज दिया जाता है। पुलिस ये चालाकी डॉन के साथियों को रंगे हाथों पकड़ने की अपनी एक गुप्त योजना के तहत करती है। अभिनेत्री ज़ीनत अमान ने फ़िल्म में रोमा की भूमिका निभाई है। रोमा डॉन से अपने भाई की मौत का बदला लेना चाहती है। लेकिन वो इस बात से बिल्कुल अनजान है कि वो डॉन को नहीं, विजय को मारने की कोशिश कर रही है।

डॉन इसलिए ख़ास है क्योंकि यह उस दौर की अमिताभ की दूसरी सामाजिक ड्रामा या मसाला फ़िल्मों से काफ़ी अलग है। डॉन एक ख़ास शैली में बनी (जॉनर फ़िल्म) है। यह साठ के दशक की जेम्स बॉन्ड शृंखला की फ़िल्मों और दूसरी हॉलीवुड थ्रिलर फिल्मों का स्थानीय रूपांतरण जैसा है। फ़िल्म में एक फटने को तैयार ब्रीफकेस और ज़ीनत अमान के निभाये रोमा के किरदार में बॉन्ड गर्ल की छाप इसी शैली के चलते है। इसके साथ भारतीयों की पसन्द का विशेष ख्याल रखते हुए सुपरस्टार को दोहरी भूमिकाओं में रखा गया है, क्योंकि भारतीय दर्शक को अपने नायक के जितने दर्शन मिलें उतने कम हैं।

चंद्रा बारोट द्वारा निर्देशित डॉन को हिन्दी सिनेमा की शहरी दर्शकों के मन में बेहतर पैठ बनाने की एक कोशिश की तरह देखा जा सकता है, जिसमें घरेलू फ़िल्म के मसाले में ही उसे बॉन्ड फ़िल्म वाला मज़ा भी देने की कोशिश की गई है। इसमें हॉलीवुड शैली के रोमांच को विशिष्ट भारतीय तत्वों के साथ मिलाने का प्रयोग कामयाबी के साथ किया गया। इस प्रयोग से एक अनूठे सिनेमाई अनुभव ने जन्म लिया जो समय की कसौटी पर खरा उतरा है।
