Introduction
Born into a Punjabi Jat family in the village of Nasrali, near Ludhiana, to Kewal Krishan and Satwant Kaur, he spent his formative years in Sahnewal, attending the school where his father served as headmaster before completing his matriculation in Phagwara. After winning a nationwide talent search run by Filmfare magazine, he relocated to Mumbai. His debut came with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960), a film that passed largely unnoticed, but commercial recognition followed swiftly with Shola Aur Shabnam (1961), and then Anpadh (1962) and Bandini (1963). His true breakthrough arrived in 1964 — a Filmfare-nominated turn in Ayee Milan Ki Bela, alongside a role in the acclaimed war drama Haqeeqat the same year.
Dharmendra delivered remarkable performances throughout the 1970s, forming a successful on-screen partnership with Hema Malini and starring in highly successful films such as Jeevan Mrityu (1970), Tum Haseen Main Jawan (1970), and Sharafat (1970).
He is also remembered for his chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan in classics like Chupke Chupke and Sholay. — while his chemistry with Amitabh Bachchan defined classics such as Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay (1975). These years also brought some of his most memorable roles: a righteous outlaw in Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), opposite Asha Parekh; a spirited street performer in Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), alongside Hema Malini; a schemer redeemed in Raja Jani (1972); a dual role as dacoit and son in Samadhi (1972); a man torn between two selves in Jugnu (1973); a figure shadowed by childhood tragedy in Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973); and, in a lighter register, a professor masquerading as a chauffeur in Chupke Chupke (1975), opposite Sharmila Tagore.
He carried this momentum into the late 1970s and '80s with a run of action films — Dharam Veer (1977), The Burning Train (1980), Insaniyat Ke Dushman (1987), and Hukumat (1987). The 1990s proved harder, as a series of box-office setbacks coincided with the ascent of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan. Yet his standing endured: he was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.
Alongside his screen career, Dharmendra entered public life, winning a Lok Sabha seat from Bikaner, Rajasthan, in 2004, and serving in Parliament until 2009.
His later filmography reflected a graceful shift into character roles — Life in a…Metro (2007), Johnny Gaddaar (2007), and Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), the last alongside his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol — followed by supporting turns in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023) and Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024).
Personally, he was no ordinary human being. Loved revered, and almost worshipped by his peers and men and women in the world of cinema; it was believed that such individuals did not just provide joy to family, friends, and fans, but also achieved brilliance as well as immortality in their chosen fields.
His personal life was as storied as his career. He married Prakash Kaur in 1954 and became father to actors Sunny and Bobby Deol, and daughters Vijeta and Ajeeta; his later marriage to Hema Malini, conducted amid considerable public scrutiny, brought two more daughters, Esha and Ahana. Rooted in Arya Samaj traditions, the Deol family has gone on to shape Indian cinema across generations. Dharmendra himself lived primarily at his Lonavala farmhouse while his family remained in Mumbai, and in his later years, spoke candidly about what he felt was Hindi cinema's insufficient recognition of the Deol family's legacy.
He died on 24 November 2025 at his Mumbai residence, aged 89, following a prolonged age-related illness. His final screen appearance, in Ikkis — directed by Sriram Raghavan and featuring Jaideep Ahlawat, Agastya Nanda, Suhasini Mulay, and Simar Bhatia — was released posthumously on 25 December 2025.

The Expo covers over 110 years of cinematic art, created by some of the finest film directors, cinematographers, art directors, technicians and designers working in cinema from India, Hollywood, Japan, Germany, France, and Poland. It is also a key principle at the Tuli Research Centre for India Studies (TRIS) to support new and nascent International Film Festivals in whatever capacity possible. Hence it is our privilege to help the International Film Festival of Delhi (IFFD) successfully launch its first edition on 25th March 2026. In the pioneering tradition of IFFI, and as Head of the erstwhile and much respected Osian's-Cinefan Festival for Asian and Arab Cinema with my dearly departed friend and Founder of Cinefan - Aruna Vasudev - we know what energy, expertise and commitment is required to galvanise and inspire the cinematic fraternities of Delhi, India and the rest of the world. It is a very serious and difficult task. Our audiences are demanding and to attract the young and non-cinephile is also no easy task. I hope these exhibitions will help the public grasp how deeply history is living in the contemporary. That contemporary life or creativity cannot achieve its best version without knowing and respecting the work of the best who came before us, nurturing and guiding our path with their service and vision. We look forward to welcoming you to Bharat Mandapam Hall 14 in the days to come. Please register at https://www.iffdelhi.com for the films and other events, it is free to all.Read More →
