Introduction
Kaajal (1965), produced by Pannalal Maheshwari and directed by Ram Maheshwari, is a romantic drama featuring an ensemble cast that includes Meena Kumari, Raaj Kumar, Dharmendra, Padmini, Mumtaz, Mehmood, Durga Khote and Helen. Adapted from the popular Hindi novelist Gulshan Nanda's novel Maadhavi, the screenplay was written by Phani Majumdar, with dialogues by Kidar Sharma. The film became the tenth-highest-grossing film of the year and was listed among the Top 20 films of 1965. Kaajal was declared a "hit" by Boxofficeindia.com.
The story centers around two women: Madhavi (Meena Kumari), who is self-effacing, spiritual, and deeply connected to her indigenous culture, and Bhanu (Padmini), who is sensuous, independent, possessive and passionate. Both women fall in love with Kumar Rajesh (Dharmendra), who reciprocates Madhavi's love in a platonic manner.
At the 13th Filmfare Awards, Meena Kumari won the Best Actress award, while Padmini received the Best Supporting Actress award for their memorable performances.
It was widely speculated that the film's box-office success was partly due to the real-life offscreen relationship between the lead actors, Dharmendra and Meena Kumari, which contributed to their excellent on-screen chemistry. Their closeness led to a romantic relationship that lasted through several films they made together, including Purnima, Chandan Ka Palna, Phool Aur Patthar and Kaajal.
The film's soundtrack, composed by Ravi, became immensely popular. Notable songs include Mohammad Rafi's solos "Chhoo Lene Do" and "Yeh Zulf Agar Khulke," as well as Asha Bhosle's solos "Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye" and "Mere Bhaiya, Mere Chanda," which are considered timeless classics.

काजल फ़िल्म की कहानी दो स्त्री किरदारों के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। एक ओर माधवी (मीना कुमारी) है जिसका किरदार त्याग, आध्यात्म और स्वजातीय संस्कृति की ओर गहरे झुका हुआ है। दूसरी ओर भानु (पद्मिनी) का किरदार है जिसे अपने अधिकारों के प्रति सचेत, मुखर, आज़ादख़याल स्त्री कहा जा सकता है। आगे होता कुछ यूँ है कि माधवी और भानु दोनों को एक ही नौजवान कुमार राजेश (धर्मेंद्र) से प्रेम हो जाता है। राजेश भी माधवी के प्रेम का जवाब देता है, लेकिन मात्र भावनात्मक स्तर पर।
तेरहवें फ़िल्मफ़ेयर पुरस्कारों में काजल के लिए मीना कुमारी को सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेत्री का पुरस्कार मिला, जबकि पद्मिनी ने अपनी भूमिका के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ सहायक अभिनेत्री का पुरस्कार जीता।
