Introduction

Shyama (born Khurshid Akhtar; 7 June 1935 – 14 November 2017) was a distinguished Indian actress who graced Hindi cinema for over four decades, from 1945 to 1989. Celebrated for her vivacious screen presence and expressive performances, she is best remembered for her roles in Aar Paar (1954) and Barsaat Ki Raat (1960).

Born in Lahore, Punjab, then part of British India, Shyama hailed from a Muslim Arain family. She moved to Mumbai in the 1940s, where her artistic journey began at a young age. She appeared in early films such as Shaukat Hussain Rizvi's Zeenat (1945) and Meerabai (1947). Her natural charm and confidence soon made her a sought-after leading lady, and she went on to star opposite Shammi Kapoor in the romantic classic Mirza Sahiban (1957).

Known for her conviction that true stars are born rather than made, Shyama embraced acting with instinctive grace. Director Vijay Bhatt gave her the screen name by which she would achieve fame. With memorable performances in Aar Paar and Barsaat Ki Raat, she established herself as one of the most popular actresses of the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in over 150 films—many in leading roles. Between 1952 and 1960 alone, she featured in nearly 80 films.

In 1953, Shyama married noted cinematographer Fali Mistry, a Parsi from Bombay. The couple kept their marriage secret for almost a decade, fearing it might affect her popularity. They later had three children—sons Faroukh and Rohin, and a daughter, Shirrin.

Her versatility shone through films such as Tarana, Milan, Bhai-Bhai (1956), Mirza Sahiban (1957), Bhabhi (1957), and Sharada (1957), the last of which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Renowned for her sensitivity to music and rhythm, Shyama brought life to timeless songs like Ae Dil Mujhe Bata De, O Chand Jahan Wo Jaye, Ae Lo Main Hari Piya, Chhupa Kar Meri Aankhon Ko, Sun Sun Sun Sun Zalima, and Ka Re Ka Re Badara. She also played a memorable double role in Do Bahen (1959).

Later, she appeared in Masterji (1985), Ajanabee (1974), Sawan Bhadon (1970), and Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966).

Shyama passed away in Mumbai on 14 November 2017, at the age of 82, due to a lung infection. She rests at Badakabarastan, Marine Lines—remembered as one of Hindi cinema's most radiant stars.
