Introduction

Mehmood Ali (29 September 1932 – 23 July 2004) Popularly known simply as Mehmood, was an Indian actor, comedian, singer, director, and producer, widely regarded as one of the greatest comic performers in the history of Hindi cinema. Renowned for his remarkable versatility, he excelled in comic, dramatic, and character roles during a career spanning more than four decades, appearing in over 300 films. His distinctive comic timing, expressive performances, and ability to blend humour with emotion established him as one of the most influential entertainers of his generation.
Born in Bombay (now Mumbai), Mehmood was the eldest son of celebrated film and stage actor-dancer Mumtaz Ali and Latifunnisa. His sister, Minoo Mumtaz, became a noted actress and dancer, while his younger brother Anwar Ali later worked as an actor and producer. Mehmood married Madhu Kumari in 1953, and the couple had four children before divorcing in 1967. He later married Tracy, with whom he had three more children, including Ginny Ali, who appeared in Ginny Aur Johnny (1976).
Mehmood began his career as a child artist in films such as Kismet (1943). Before establishing himself in cinema, he worked various jobs, including selling poultry products and serving as a driver for filmmaker P. L. Santoshi. He gradually secured minor roles in Do Bigha Zamin (1953), C.I.D. (1956), and Pyaasa (1957), before emerging as one of Hindi cinema's leading comic actors during the late 1950s and 1960s. His most celebrated performances came in films such as Dil Tera Diwana (1962), Bhoot Bangla (1965), Gumnaam (1965), Pyar Kiye Jaa (1966), Padosan (1968), Waris (1969), Kunwara Baap (1974), Bombay to Goa (1972), and Ginny Aur Johnny (1976). As a filmmaker, he directed Bhoot Bangla (1965), Kunwara Baap (1974), and Ek Baap Chhe Bete (1976), demonstrating his talent beyond acting.
Mehmood played a significant role in nurturing emerging talent in the Hindi film industry. He provided important early opportunities to composer R. D. Burman, music director Rajesh Roshan, actress Aruna Irani, and actor Amitabh Bachchan. His casting of Bachchan in Bombay to Goa (1972) proved instrumental in launching the latter's career, and Bachchan later acknowledged Mehmood as his "godfather" in the film industry.
Throughout his career, Mehmood received widespread critical and popular recognition. He won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for Dil Tera Diwana (1962), Pyar Kiye Jaa (1966), and Waris (1969), and received numerous additional Filmfare nominations for his comic performances. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, he was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995.
In his later years, Mehmood appeared less frequently on screen, although he made a memorable final appearance as Johnny in Andaz Apna Apna (1994). He died in his sleep on 23 July 2004 in Pennsylvania, United States, while undergoing treatment for cardiovascular disease. His death marked the end of an era in Hindi cinema, and he continues to be remembered as one of its most iconic and beloved comic actors.

बाद के सालों में महमूद स्क्रीन पर कम ही नज़र आए, हालांकि 'अंदाज़ अपना अपना' (1994) में जॉनी के तौर पर उनकी आख़िरी परफ़ॉर्मेंस यादगार रही। दिल की बीमारी का इलाज कराते समय 23 जुलाई 2004 को अमेरिका के पेंसिल्वेनिया में सोते हुए उनका निधन हो गया। उनके निधन के साथ ही हिंदी सिनेमा के एक दौर का अंत हो गया, और उन्हें आज भी सिनेमा के सबसे मशहूर और पसंदीदा कॉमेडी एक्टर्स में से एक के तौर पर याद किया जाता है।
