Introduction

C.I.D. (1956) was a pivotal film in Indian cinema, marking Waheeda Rehman's Hindi film debut in a negative role. Directed by Raj Khosla, it remains one of the earliest and most celebrated Indian crime thrillers. Produced by Guru Dutt, the film starred the charismatic Dev Anand, Shakila, Johnny Walker and K. N. Singh in key roles. Dev Anand's portrayal of a police inspector investigating a murder case captivated audience, and the film became both a critical and commercial success.
However, it was the film's music that truly left a lasting impact. Composer O. P. Nayyar, along with lyricists Majrooh Sultanpuri and Jan Nisar Akhtar crafted a soundtrack that became iconic. Songs like "Mumbai Meri Jaan," "Leke pehla pehla pyar," "Ankhon hi ankhon mein ishara ho gaya," and "Yaar Badshah" were runaway hits, and they continue to be loved by generations of listeners.
Beyond the music, C.I.D. also boasted impressive behind-the-scenes talent. The film's choreography was handled by the legendary Zohra Sehgal, an acclaimed actress and dancer. The costumes were designed by Bhanu Athaiya, who was making her debut in the field and would go on to win an Academy Award for her work on Gandhi (1982).

सी.आई.डी. (1956) की जगह हिन्दी सिनेमा में ख़ास है। यह वहीदा रहमान की हिन्दी फ़िल्मों में अभिनय की शुरुआत थी, वो भी एक नकारात्मक भूमिका में। राज खोसला के निर्देशन में बनी यह फ़िल्म भारतीय सिनेमा की शुरुआती और सबसे चर्चित क्राइम थ्रिलर फ़िल्मों में से एक है। इसके निर्माता गुरु दत्त थे और करिश्माई अभिनेता देव आनंद, शकीला, जॉनी वॉकर और के.एन. सिंह ने फ़िल्म में प्रमुख भूमिकाएँ निभाई थीं। एक हत्या के मामले की जाँच कर रहे पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर की भूमिका में देव आनंद को दर्शकों ने खूब पसन्द किया और फ़िल्म आलोचकों की नज़र में और व्यावसायिक दोनों स्तर पर सफल रही।
पर इस फ़िल्म के संगीत ने दर्शकों के मन पर सबसे दूरगामी और स्थायी प्रभाव छोड़ा। संगीतकार ओ.पी. नैय्यर के साथ गीतकार मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी और जाँनिसार अख़्तर की विलक्षण प्रतिभा ने मिलकर ऐसे ऐसे सदाबहार गीत रचे कि फ़िल्म का संगीत अमर हो गया। “ये है बॉम्बे मेरी जान”, “लेके पहला पहला प्यार”, “आँखों ही आँखों में इशारा हो गया” और “यार बादशाह” जैसे गाने इतने लोकप्रिय हुए कि आज भी श्रोताओं की नई से नई पीढ़ियाँ उन्हें गुनगुनाती मिलती हैं।
इसके कर्णप्रिय संगीत के अलावा सी.आई.डी. को पर्दे के पीछे उभरती प्रतिभाओं को मौका देने के लिए भी याद किया जा सकता है। फ़िल्म की कोरियोग्राफ़ी प्रसिद्ध अभिनेत्री और डांसर ज़ोहरा सहगल ने की थी। फ़िल्म की वेशभूषा भानु अथैया द्वारा तैयार की गई थीं जो सी.आई.डी. के साथ इस क्षेत्र में अपनी शुरुआत कर रही थीं। आगे जाकर भानु अथैया ने गांधी (1982) फ़िल्म में अपने वेशभूषा निर्देशन के लिए ऑस्कर पुरस्कार जीता।
सी.आई.डी. की व्यावसायिक सफलता और आलोचकों द्वारा इसे मिली प्रशंसा ने फ़िल्म को भारतीय सिनेमा की विकासयात्रा का एक ख़ास पड़ाव बना दिया। एक मनोरंजक अपराध कथा को अविस्मरणीय संगीत और फ़िल्मउद्योग की कुछ बेहतरीन प्रतिभाओं के पर्दे के आगे और पीछे उल्लेखनीय योगदान के साथ जोड़ दें तो सी.आई.डी. अपने समय की एक यादगार फ़िल्म बन जाती है।
