Mahanagar (The Big City, 1963) The quietly revolutionary Bengali-language drama written and directed by Satyajit Ray, stands as a luminous exploration of shifting gender roles and the silent tremors of social change in mid-century Kolkata. Loosely adapted from Abataranika, a short story by Narendranath Mitra, the film unfolds with quiet grace and growing intensity, tracing the metamorphosis of a middle-class housewife into a woman awakening to her own agency. At its heart is Arati Mazumdar, portrayed with soul-stirring subtlety by Madhabi Mukherjee. A dutiful homemaker in a conservative household, Arati finds herself compelled by financial strain to step beyond the domestic threshold and into the unfamiliar world of paid labour, as a door-to-door saleswoman. What begins as an act of necessity slowly evolves into a journey of self-discovery, as she confronts not only the challenges of the workplace but...

Mahanagar, much like Ray's previous films, takes an interest in the idealization of women which comes in conflict with the pater familias who rationalises the prevention of the wife from joining the workforce outside the home and hearth, to maintain order. Set in the mid 1950s, the film shows Calcutta when independent India was merely seven or eight years old and its economy was struggling with complex ramifications. The film plays out in the poor, lower-middle class family of the Mazumdars- and around Arati- who lives with her husband Subrata, son Pintu and the in-laws (the father in-law Priyagopal, mother Sarojini and sister Bani) in a suburban neighbourhood of Kalighat. The opening sequence is an eloquent depiction of the conditions in which the family is obliged to live. Sarojini is squatted beside the stove, frying fish.
