Film Title

Mahanagar (The Big City), 1963, India, Bengali

Scene Description When Arati finds her in the washroom, Edith reveals that she has been dismissed from work. Mr Mukherjee has treated her with utmost disrespect, disbelieved the ingenuity of her sick leave and made suggestive comments about her personal life- more particularly insinuating at her sexual wantonness for no reason but the prejudices he holds against white women. Regardless of who she is, Mr Mukherjee has no right to make such remarks. When Arati confronts him, he tries to trump her with his position as the boss. Disgusted, Arati exits the job in protest. When the situation at home dawns upon her after a few minutes, she breaks down in tears. However, Subrata consoles her and hails her courage for holding her own against injustice despite her desperate need for a job. Hand in hand, they move towards the vast and uncertain city with hope and courage of finding livelihood. (17/17)
