Mahanagar (The Big City), 1963, India, Bengali
Scene Description Alluding to a crashing economy of the 50s when overnight bank shut downs were a fairly common phenomena in Calcutta, the story shows Subrata losing his clerk's job at the bank and a crowd of agitated clients hounding him. This sudden development makes him walk back from his decision to make Arati resign. Someone has to keep the kitchen-fire lit. Suddenly, the dynamic in the household is overturned. Arati becomes the sole breadwinner, a reality that disconcerts Subrata to the point that he starts doubting his wife's personal integrity. (12/17)
