Introduction

A distinguished actress who graced the Indian cinema landscape for over six decades, she contributed to the cultural tapestry of Hindi film through a career marked by profound versatility. Emerging as a child artist, she soon became renowned for her portrayal of maternal figures in an array of celebrated films, particularly excelling in roles as a loving mother and grandmother. Her iconic performance as the wife of Balraj Sahni in Waqt (1965) and as Kajol's grandmother in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) remain etched in the hearts of film enthusiasts.

Her early professional years saw her contributing to All India Radio in Lahore before the Partition, and later at the Delhi station. She made her cinematic debut in Fashionable Wife (1938) and went on to appear in over 130 films, building a legacy that spanned multiple generations. Among the noteworthy films she graced include Kashmir (1951), Naukri (1954), Azaad (1955), Haqeeqat (1964), Sangam (1964), Arzoo (1965), and Hamraaz (1967), to name but a few. Her frequent collaborations with Yash Chopra, starting with Daag: A Poem of Love (1973), and later Chandni (1989) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), cemented her status as a beloved figure in the world of Hindi cinema.

Sachdev's career also saw her venture into English-language films, including Nine Hours to Rama (1963), directed by Mark Robson, and The Householder (1963), directed by Merchant Ivory. Yet, it was her portrayal in Waqt, where she captivated audiences with her performance in the unforgettable song Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen, that remains one of her crowning achievements.

In her personal life, Achala Sachdev married Clifford Douglas Peters, an English mechanical engineer and industrialist, with whom she relocated to Pune. There, they led a quiet life after he established a factory in the Bhosari industrial estate. Following his passing, she lived alone, later donating her flat to the Janseva Foundation, a gesture of her generosity. In the autumn of her life, after a tragic fall in 2011, she was diagnosed with multiple embolisms in her brain, leading to her eventual paralysis and loss of sight. She passed away on 30 April 2012, leaving behind a cinematic legacy that continues to be celebrated by generations of film lovers.
