Nitin Mukesh

Nitin Mukesh Mathur (born 27 June 1950) is a distinguished Indian playback singer whose contributions to Hindi cinema and devotional music have earned him enduring recognition. Celebrated for his soft, velvety voice and refined singing style, he established himself as a prominent playback singer during the 1980s and 1990s while also achieving considerable acclaim for his devotional bhajans. Throughout his career, he has performed extensively on international stages, including a successful concert tour of the United States in 1993 and the global concert series Kal Ki Yaadein in 2006, conceived as a tribute to the musical legacy of his father, the legendary playback singer Mukesh. Born into a family deeply rooted in India's cultural traditions, Nitin Mukesh is the son of the iconic playback singer Mukesh, a Mathur Kayastha from Delhi, and Saral Trivedi, a Gujarati Shrimali Brahmin. He is married to Nishi Mukesh, and their son, Neil Nitin Mukesh, has established himself as a successful actor in Hindi cinema, continuing the family's longstanding association with the Indian entertainment industry. Commencing his playback career in the late 1970s, Nitin Mukesh collaborated with several of the most influential composers of modern Hindi cinema, including Khayyam, R. D. Burman, Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem–Shravan, and Anand–Milind. His voice was frequently associated with leading actors such as Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Anil Kapoor, and Jackie Shroff. He also shared memorable duets with many of India's foremost female playback singers, including Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Anuradha Paudwal, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, and Alka Yagnik. Among Nitin Mukesh's most celebrated recordings are Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi from Kranti (1981), Aaja Re O Mere Dilbar Aaja from Noorie (1979), So Gaya Yeh Jahan from Tezaab (1988), My Name Is Lakhan from Ram Lakhan (1989), and Tu Mujhe Suna from Chandni (1989). Other enduring successes include Zindagi Ka Naam Dosti from Khudgarz (1987), Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni from Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni (1989), Paisa Bolta Hai from Kala Bazaar (1989), Chandi Ki Cycle Sone Ki Seat from Bhabhi (1991), and Is Jahan Ki Nahi Hai from King Uncle (1993). In recognition of his distinguished contribution to Indian music, he was honoured with the Lokmat Sur Jyotsna National Music Award – Icon Award in 2025, reaffirming his lasting significance in the history of Indian playback singing.
