Introduction

Kranti, directed, produced, and edited by Manoj Kumar, is a grand historical drama set during the 19th-century struggle for Indian independence from British rule. The film, with a screenplay crafted by the legendary duo Salim-Javed, tells the story of four revolutionaries, played by Dilip Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Manoj Kumar, and Shatrughan Sinha, who lead the fight against colonial oppression between 1825 and 1875.

Manoj Kumar, already renowned for his patriotic films, does justice to his moniker “Bharat Kumar” with Kranti, blending themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and resistance against imperialism.

The film was envisioned on an unprecedented scale, with a massive budget of Rs 3 crore, making it one of the most ambitious projects of its time. Despite facing major financial hurdles, where Manoj Kumar had to sell his properties, the film became one of Bollywood's biggest blockbusters of all time. Interestingly, Kranti marked the return of Dilip Kumar to the screen after a four-year absence, further adding to its cultural impact.

क्रांति के निर्माता, निर्देशक, संपादक और अभिनेता मनोज कुमार थे। पूरी नाटकीयता और भव्यता के साथ निर्मित यह ऐतिहासिक फ़िल्म उन्नीसवीं सदी में ब्रिटिश शासन से भारतीयों के स्वतंत्रता के लिए संघर्ष की पृष्ठभूमि पर रची गई है। हिन्दी सिनेमा की सबसे चर्चित लेखक जोड़ी सलीम-जावेद की पटकथा पर बनी क्रांति की कहानी के केंद्र में सन् 1825 से 1875 के बीच औपनिवेशिक क्रूरताओं के विरुद्ध लड़ाई का नेतृत्व करनेवाले चार क्रांतिकारियों के कारनामे हैं। फ़िल्म में इन क्रांतिकारियों की भूमिका दिलीप कुमार, शशि कपूर, मनोज कुमार और शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा ने निभाई है।

शहीद (1965), उपकार (1967) और पूरब और पच्छिम (1970) जैसी फ़िल्मों के कारण पहले से ही देशभक्तिपूर्ण सिनेमा के लिए मशहूर मनोज कुमार क्रांति के साथ अपने फ़िल्मी नाम “भारत कुमार” को पर्दे पर ज़िन्दा कर देते हैं। फ़िल्म में देशभक्ति, बलिदान और साम्राज्यवाद के खिलाफ विद्रोह की भावनाएँ कूट-कूटकर भरी हुई हैं।

क्रांति का निर्माण अभूतपूर्व बड़े पैमाने किया गया था और 3 करोड़ रुपये से ज़्यादा के बजट के साथ बनी यह फ़िल्म अपने समय की सबसे महत्वाकांक्षी सिनेमाई परियोजनाओं में से एक थी। फ़िल्म के निर्माण को बड़ी वित्तीय बाधाओं का सामना करना पड़ा और यहाँ तक नौबत आई कि मनोज कुमार को अपनी संपत्तियाँ बेचनी पड़ीं। पर रिलीज़ के बाद यह फ़िल्म हिन्दी सिनेमा इतिहास की सबसे बड़ी ब्लॉकबस्टर फ़िल्मों में से एक बन गई। इसी फ़िल्म से महान अभिनेता दिलीप कुमार चार साल के अन्तराल के बाद पर्दे पर वापस लौटे और यह भी क्रांति को लोकप्रिय सांस्कृतिक इतिहास की एक घटना बना देता है।
