Scene DescriptionA man belonging to the Gond tribe, appears out of nowhere and speaks the voice of simple human reason. Observing Dukhi’s failure to make an impression on the wood, he asks him if he has ever chopped wood before. Dukhi replies in the negative; he has cut only grass. This prompts the next rational question from the Gond, “Then why are you cutting wood?” After all, it is the logic of caste that grass-cutters cut grass and woodcutters cut wood. (8/24)
