Introduction

Benegal's biting satire, Mandi, is a provocative exploration of the lives of sex workers, shedding light on the many paradoxes that surround their marginalisation. Based on Pakistani author Ghulam Abbas' Urdu short story Anandi, the film is set in a bustling city where a brothel is targeted by politicians who covet its prime location. Under the guise of morality, these leaders rally against the brothel, convincing the community to support their cause. Promising to relocate the sex workers to a distance, the politicians appear to be solving the issue but are only eager to push the ladies to a spot they deem fit- the fringes of the society. Benegal's incisive storytelling exposes the hypocrisy of a society that publicly denounces sex work while privately patronizing it.

Benegal's film humanises the sex workers, depicting them with depth and dignity, while offering a scathing critique of the political and moral contradictions that make up their society. The film's ensemble cast—featuring 12 Filmfare award winners, including Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Naseeruddin Shah, to name a few—delivers powerful performances that elevate the impactful narrative. निर्देशक श्याम बेनगल की तीखे व्यंग्य से रची फ़िल्म मंडी वेश्याओं के जीवन और उन्हें समाज के हाशिये पर ढकेले जाने की कोशिशों से जुड़े कई विरोधाभासों को उजागर करती है। पाकिस्तानी लेखक गुलाम अब्बास की 'आनंदी' शीर्षक से लिखी उर्दू कहानी पर आधारित मंडी की कहानी एक व्यस्त शहर के केन्द्रीय स्थान पर बसे एक वेश्यालय को अपने कथानक का केन्द्र बनाती है। अब यह वेश्यालय राजनेताओं के एक ऐसे गुट के निशाने पर है जो शहर की इस प्रमुख लोकेशन को अपने कब्ज़े में लेने की लालसा मन में दबाये बैठे हैं। नैतिकता की दुहाई देते ये नेतागण वेश्यालय को वहाँ से हटाने के लिए आन्दोलन खड़ा कर देते हैं और समूचे समाज को यकीन दिलाते हुए अपने पक्ष में खड़ा करने लगते हैं। वेश्याओं को एक सुदूर स्थान पर पुनर्वासित करने का वादा करते हुए ये राजनेता समस्या का एक हल भी पेश करते हैं, लेकिन असल में वे इन महिलाओं को समाज के हाशिए पर धकेल देना चाहते हैं। बेनगल की गहराई तक मार करती बेधक सिनेमाई नज़र एक ऐसे सभ्य समाज के पाखंड को उजागर करती है जो सार्वजनिक रूप से वेश्यावृत्ति की निंदा करता है पर निजी स्तर पर खुद ही उसे बढ़ावा देता है और उसके होने का कारण भी है।
