Introduction
Nadira (born Florence Ezekiel; 5 December 1932 – 9 February 2006) was a distinguished Indian actress who left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema through her remarkable performances and magnetic screen presence. Emerging as one of the most captivating figures of the 1950s and 1960s, she featured in some of Indian cinema's most iconic films, including Aan (1952), Shree 420 (1955), Pakeezah (1972), and Julie (1975)—the latter earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Born into a Baghdadi Jewish family in Baghdad, Iraq, Nadira migrated to Bombay with her parents in infancy as they sought new opportunities. Her tryst with cinema began early, debuting at age ten in Mauj (1943). Her defining breakthrough arrived when Sardar Akhtar, wife of filmmaker Mehboob Khan, cast her as a regal Rajput princess in Aan (1952)—a performance that catapulted her to fame. She achieved further acclaim as Maya, the elegant yet morally ambiguous socialite in Shree 420 (1955), whose rendition of Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh became legendary.
Off-screen, Nadira lived as boldly as she acted. Renowned for her independence and flamboyant lifestyle, she was among the highest-paid actresses of her time and reportedly the first Indian woman to own a Rolls-Royce. Fiercely candid and unapologetically modern, she defied convention in both life and art.
Throughout her illustrious career, Nadira masterfully embodied the archetypal vamp and the Westernized woman—characters often juxtaposed against the demure heroines of her era. Yet, her portrayals transcended stereotype; her poise, voice, and charisma imbued these roles with complexity and allure, particularly in Saagar (1985) that reflected both versatility and depth, culminating in her poignant final appearance as Lady D'Costa in Josh (2000).
In her later years, Nadira lived in seclusion in Mumbai as her health declined. She passed away on 9 February 2006 at the age of seventy-three, following a prolonged illness. Her legacy endures as that of a trailblazer who redefined glamour, strength, and sophistication in Indian cinema.
इराक़ के बग़दाद में एक बग़दादी यहूदी परिवार में जन्मीं नादिरा बचपन में ही अपने माता-पिता के साथ नए मौकों की तलाश में बॉम्बे आ गई थीं। सिनेमा से उनका नाता कम उम्र में ही जुड़ गया था। उन्होंने दस साल की उम्र में 'मौज' (1943) से डेब्यू किया था। उन्हें असली पहचान तब मिली जब फ़िल्ममेकर महबूब ख़ान की पत्नी सरदार अख़्तर ने उन्हें 'आन' (1952) में एक शाही राजपूत राजकुमारी की भूमिका दी, जिस भूमिका ने उन्हें मशहूर बना दिया। 'श्री 420' (1955) में माया के किरदार एक शानदार लेकिन नैतिक रूप से उलझी हुई सोशलाइट के तौर पर उन्हें और भी तारीफ़ मिली। इस फ़िल्म में 'मुड़ मुड़ के न देख' गाने पर उनकी परफ़ॉर्मेंस यादगार बन गई।
असल ज़िंदगी में भी नादिरा उतनी ही बेबाक थीं जितनी कि अपनी एक्टिंग में। अपनी आज़ादी और शानदार जीवनशैली के लिए मशहूर नादिरा उस दौर की सबसे ज़्यादा फ़ीस लेने वाली अभिनेत्रियों में से एक थीं और कहा जाता है कि वह रोल्स-रॉयस कार ख़रीदने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला थीं। बेबाक और खुले विचारों वाली नादिरा ने ज़िंदगी और कला, दोनों ही मामलों में पारंपरिक सोच को चुनौती दी।
अपने शानदार करियर के दौरान, नादिरा ने 'वैम्प' (खलनायिका) और पश्चिमी अंदाज़ वाली महिला के किरदारों को बख़ूबी निभाया। ऐसे किरदार जो अक्सर उस दौर की सीधी-सादी और शर्मीली हीरोइनों के बिल्कुल उलट होते थे। फ़िर भी, उनके निभाए किरदार घिसे-पिटे सांचों से कहीं आगे थे। उनके अंदाज़, आवाज़ और करिश्मे ने इन किरदारों को गहराई और आकर्षण दिया। खासकर 'सागर' (1985) में उनकी अदाकारी में विविधता और गहराई दोनों दिखीं और 'जोश' (2000) में लेडी डी'कोस्टा के तौर पर उनकी आख़िरी और यादगार भूमिका ने उनके अभिनय का बेहतरीन समापन किया।
अपनी ज़िंदगी के आख़िरी सालों में, सेहत ख़राब होने के कारण नादिरा मुंबई में अकेले रहने लगी थीं। लंबी बीमारी के बाद 9 फरवरी 2006 को 73 साल की उम्र में उनका निधन हो गया। उन्हें एक ऐसी अगुआ कलाकार के तौर पर याद किया जाता है जिन्होंने भारतीय सिनेमा में ग्लैमर, मज़बूती और नफ़ासत की नई परिभाषा गढ़ी।
