    1. Colonel Mordaunt's Cockfight
      Colonel Mordaunt's Cockfight
Cockfights were a popular sport in India and other parts of the world in the late eighteenth-century. In 1786, the then Governor-General of India Warren Hastings commissioned German-born artist Johann Zoffany to paint the historic cockfight that had many British East India Company employees and Indian royalties in attendance. Several versions of the painting have thus been made and depicted in various mediums over the course of more than two centuries, including the cock-fight scene in Satyajit Ray's 1977 film Shatranj Ke Khilari.

The Maharaja of Vijayanagram proposed the ides of establishing a medical college in Lucknow in 1870, but the plan was delayed due to the paucity of funds. In 1905, during the visit of King-Emperor, George V, the then Prince of Wales, the registrar of Allahabad University was contacted by Secretary to Govt. U.P. The project was started with humble donations from the Taluqdars and Zamindars of Agra and Oudh. The foundation stone of the college was laid by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales in 1906 and the institution opened its doors to students in 1912. The architect of the buildings was Sir Swinton Jacob and the features were designed in the Indo-Saracenic style to be in keeping with ancient and royal buildings of this capital of Oudh and with the Imambara or Tomb of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah, which stands immediately besides the College and which dates from 1784.\n\nIn 1912, the institution was transferred to Lucknow University, before the college was affiliated to the Allahabad University. The institution still fuctions as one of the premier medical universities of the area.
