Benegal's biting satire, Mandi, is a provocative exploration of the lives of sex workers, shedding light on the many paradoxes that surround their marginalisation. Based on Pakistani author Ghulam Abbas' Urdu short story Anandi, the film is set in a bustling city where a brothel is targeted by politicians who covet its prime location. Under the guise of morality, these leaders rally against the brothel, convincing the community to support their cause. Promising to relocate the sex workers to a distance, the politicians appear to be solving the issue but are only eager to push the ladies to a spot they deem fit- the fringes of the society.
