Film TitleDevi (The Goddess), 1960, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionBhudeb sits in the horse drawn cart and reveals to an intent Umaprasad that he is in love with a widow. His orthodox Hindu father would certainly disown him if he marries her. Umaprasad consoles him that they can convince the man, that Isharwchandra Vidyasagar's arguments for widow remarriage are on his fingertips. It is a pertinent moment that reflects on the young man who, influenced by the Young Bengal Movement and Brahmo reformism, imagines that the barbarity of authoritarian Brahminism can be changed with European rationalism (16/30)
