Deepti Naval
Deepti Naval (born 3 February 1952) is an Indian-American actress, filmmaker, writer, painter, photographer and novelist, best known for her influential presence in Hindi cinema. An American citizen, she was born in Amritsar, Punjab, and moved to New York in 1971 when her father accepted a teaching position at the City University of New York. Naval studied fine arts at Hunter College, an artistic foundation that would later inform her multidisciplinary career. She was married to filmmaker Prakash Jha, and the couple share an adopted daughter. Naval made her screen debut in Shyam Benegal's Junoon (1978) and gained wider recognition with Ek Baar Phir (1980). Alongside contemporaries Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi, she emerged as a leading voice of India's Parallel Cinema movement, noted for her nuanced portrayals in films such as Kamla (1984) and Ankahee (1985). Beginning with Chashme Buddoor (1981), her on-screen partnership with Farooq Sheikh became emblematic of gentle, middle-class storytelling in Hindi cinema, continuing through Saath Saath (1982), Kissi Se Na Kehna (1983), Katha (1982), Rang Birangi (1983), and Faasle (1985). They reunited three decades later in Tell Me O Kkhuda (2011), and their final collaboration, Listen…Amaya (2013), was released the year Sheikh passed away. In the 2000s, Naval returned to prominence through socially engaged dramas including Bawandar and Firaaq. She earned Best Actress honours at several international festivals for Leela (2002), Memories in March (2010) and Listen… Amaya (2013). In 2007, she was named Tribute Honouree at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. Her television work spans telefilms and serials such as Sauda (1992), Tanaav (1994), and Muqammal (2003). She later appeared in the series Mukti Bandhan (2011) and made her stage debut in 2015 with Ek Mulaqaat, portraying celebrated Punjabi writer Amrita Pritam. In 2019, she featured in an episode of Zoya Akhtar's acclaimed series Made in Heaven. Naval's directorial debut, Do Paise Ki Dhoop, Chaar Aane Ki Baarish (2009), starring Manisha Koirala and Rajit Kapur, won Best Screenplay at the 2009 New York Indian Film Festival and was released globally on Netflix in 2019. She later wrote and directed the television series Thoda Sa Aasmaan (1995) and produced the travel programme The Path Less Travelled (1995). A published poet and author, Naval has released Lamha Lamha (1983), Black Wind and Other Poems (2004), and The Mad Tibetan (2011). She is also an accomplished painter and photographer. Through the Vinod Pandit Charitable Trust, she supports the education of underprivileged girls.
