Introduction

Bewafa (1952) is an Indian film directed by M. L. Anand, featuring the popular on-screen pair Nargis and Raj Kapoor, alongside veteran actor Ashok Kumar, who portrays a painter.

The story centers on Roopa (Nargis), a poor young woman who is forced to earn a living by her alcoholic uncle. When she fails to meet his financial demands, he throws her out of the house. Her neighbor, Raj (Raj Kapoor), offers her a loan to help her get back on her feet. Despite his help, Roopa continues to struggle until she meets Ashok, a kind-hearted painter. The two begin selling paintings together, and a bond forms between them. However, Raj re-enters her life, creating a love triangle between Roopa, Raj, and Ashok.

The film's music was one of its strongest aspects and became a significant hit. Composed by Alla Rakha Qureshi, the soundtrack featured memorable songs such as: Dil Matwala Lakh Sambhala; Tu Aaye Na Aaye Teri Khushi; Tana Der Na Tana. These songs were rendered by legendary playback singers including Talat Mahmood, Lata Mangeshkar, and Geeta Dutt. The lyrics, written by Sarshar Sailani and Sardul Kwatra, complemented the melodious compositions. Notably, Alla Rakha Qureshi, the film's composer, would later gain fame as a renowned tabla virtuoso.

Bewafa was both a commercial and critical success. It grossed approximately ₹0.95 crore at the box office, with a net collection of ₹0.5 crore. While it may not have reached the blockbuster status of Sangdil (also released in 1952), it still performed well and was considered a hit by Box Office India. The film remains notable for its emotional storyline, strong performances, and enduring music.
