Introduction

Trikal (1985) written and directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by Freni M. Variava, is set in Goa during the final days of Portuguese rule. Marking Leela Naidu's return to cinema after a 16-year hiatus, the film explores the cultural and psychological impact of colonialism on a privileged Catholic Goan family. The story and screenplay were penned by Benegal, with dialogues by Shama Zaidi.

Featuring a stellar ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Nikhil Bhagat, Anita Kanwar, Neena Gupta, Soni Razdan, Dalip Tahil, K. K. Raina, Kunal Kapoor, Keith Stevenson, Lucky Ali, Salim Ghouse, Ila Arun, Jayant Kripalani, Akash Khurana, Sabira Merchant, Sushma Prakash, Remo Fernandes, Alisha Chinai, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Dhruv Ghanekar, and Joy Ghanekar, Trikal offers a rare cinematic portrayal of Goa's colonial legacy.

Told through flashbacks, the narrative begins in 1961 with Anna Souza-Soares' engagement to Erasmo, which is disrupted by her grandfather's sudden death. As her grieving grandmother, Dona Maria, conducts séances to contact the deceased, ghosts from the family's troubled past begin to surface. Meanwhile, Anna becomes pregnant by her fugitive lover, Leon, and elopes. Milagrinia, a maid and medium, also becomes pregnant and marries to avoid scandal. Twenty-four years later, Ruiz returns to the now-abandoned family estate, haunted by memories and questioning what drew him back. The film ends with a reflective monologue by Naseeruddin Shah, contemplating the actions of the characters and the transient nature of time and memory.

It remains one of only four Indian films centred on the Goa Liberation movement, alongside Saat Hindustani, Armaan, and Pukar. The film was selected for the Indian Panorama at Filmotsav 1986 and screened at the Indian Film Retrospective in Lisbon and the London Film Festival the same year. Trikal won two National Film Awards in 1986: Best Direction for Shyam Benegal and Best Costume Design for Saba Zaidi.
