Introduction

Sujata (1959) was a classic film directed by Bimal Roy, featuring Nutan and Sunil Dutt in the lead roles, with strong supporting performances from Shashikala, Lalita Pawar, Sulochana Latkar, and Tarun Bose. Based on the Bengali short story of the same name by Subodh Ghosh, the film explores the deeply rooted caste system in India. Its sensitive portrayal of caste discrimination and social inequality made it a landmark in Indian cinema.

The film tells the story of a romance between Adheer (Sunil Dutt), a young Brahmin man, and Sujata (Nutan), an untouchable woman. At its heart, Sujata is also about the intense emotional conflict a mother faces in accepting her adopted daughter. The film features Mahatma Gandhi's fight against untouchability and the myth of Chandalika in Hinduism as subtext, using these elements to critique the widespread practice of untouchability in India.

Upon its release, Sujata was a major success, winning several prestigious awards, including Filmfare Best Director and Best Film for Bimal Roy, Best Actress for Nutan, and Best Story for Subodh Ghosh. The film was also entered in the 1960 Cannes Film Festival for the Golden Palme. Nutan's performance was widely praised for its emotional depth and sincerity.

In addition, the film won the All India Certificate of Merit for Third Best Feature Film at the 1959 National Film Awards. Sujata's portrayal as a strong and independent woman was rare for its time, making her an iconic figure in Indian cinema.

The film's visual style, which included precise camera work and inventive visual juxtapositions, was influenced by European neo-realism. A highlight of the film is its exceptional music by S.D. Burman, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The songs from Sujata, such as "Suno Mere Bandhu Re," "Nanhi Kali Sone Chali" (sung by Geeta Dutt), "Jalte Hain Jiske Liye" (Talat Mahmood), "Kali Ghata Chhaye," "Tum Jeeo Hazaaron Saal" (Asha Bhosle), and "Bachpan Ke Din Bhi Kya Din The, Udte Phirte Titli Banke" (Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt), are considered timeless classics and remain extremely popular to this day.
