Ritwik Ghatak
04 November 1925 - 06 February 1976
Ritwik Ghatak was a Bengali film-director, writer, actor and post-colonial theatre activist whose short and largely ignored career can be defined only by constant struggle— struggle not for recognition but struggle against the collective amnesia of his people and against the nationalising project of cinema. Amidst a large body of mostly abandoned or unrealeased projects, his eight full-length feature films provide a jarring personal and political commentary on the failing of a people who were trying to revise their identity in a modern nation-state born out of the bloodshed of British colonial occupation and the Partition of India.
