Introduction

Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955) is a delightful romantic comedy directed and produced by Guru Dutt, with a screenplay by Abrar Alvi. The film offered a rare opportunity to see Guru Dutt's comedic talents, while also showcasing Madhubala's vivacious and enchanting presence. Madhubala plays Anita Verma, a naïve heiress who must marry an unemployed cartoonist (played by Guru Dutt) to save her fortune. Beyond her ethereal beauty, it was Madhubala's infectious joie de vivre that played a key role in the film's commercial success.

The film marked a pivotal moment in Madhubala's career, reversing the "box office poison" label she had earned in 1954. Despite being one of Indian cinema's most enduring legends, Madhubala had faced commercial setbacks in her earlier films, such as Neel Kamal (1947), Amar (1954) and Naata (1955). Even though she had received critical praise for her performance in Naata. Mr. & Mrs. '55 marked a turning point, with Madhubala's portrayal of Anita Verma becoming one of her most memorable and defining performances.

The film's success was also boosted by the musical collaboration between composer O. P. Nayyar and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. Songs like "Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji," "Thandi Hawa, Kaali Ghata," and "Preetam Aan Milo" became iconic, with the latter originally sung by C. H. Atma in 1945 and reintroduced by Geeta Dutt in this film. The song "Neela Aasmani," another standout track, was later sampled by American rappers 2 Chainz and 42 Dugg in their song "Million Dollars' Worth of Game."

Additionally, the film's use of cartoons by the legendary R. K. Laxman added a delightful visual layer to the experience. In 2019, Mr. & Mrs. '55 earned a place at number 57 on Time Out's list of "The 100 Best Bollywood Movies." While celebrated for its comic sequences, the film also faced some criticism for its portrayal of feminism and progressive themes, which some found problematic. Nonetheless, it remains a beloved classic in the Bollywood comedy genre.
