Introduction
Mashaal (1984), an action drama directed by Yash Chopra, is remembered for the reunion of the iconic on-screen pair Dilip Kumar and Waheeda Rehman, who hadn't appeared together for years. Adapted from the Marathi play Ashroonchi Zhali Phule by Vasant Kanetkar, the film was also remade in Malayalam as Ithile Iniyum Varu with Mammootty in the lead. Prior to Mashaal, the play had been adapted into the 1969 film Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool, directed by Satyen Bose.
The film featured Anil Kapoor and Rati Agnihotri in key roles, with Dilip Kumar delivering a powerful performance. Kapoor's role was initially offered to Amitabh Bachchan and then to Kamal Haasan, but both declined.
In Mashaal, Vinod Kumar (Dilip Kumar) is a law-abiding citizen who runs a newspaper, Mashaal, exposing societal ills. He tries to reform a black marketeer, Raja (Anil Kapoor), by guiding him toward journalism. However, as Vinod battles gangster Vardhan (Amrish Puri), Vardhan retaliates, destroying Vinod's life—evicting him and his wife Sudha (Waheeda Rehman), and burning down his press. One of the film's most emotional scenes shows the homeless couple wandering through a desolate area during a city-wide bandh. Sudha, suffering from illness, collapses, and Vinod desperately cries, "Ae bhai, koi hai?" Rehman's portrayal of Sudha remains one of the most poignant moments in the film.
Dilip Kumar shared in his autobiography how he drew from personal losses, including the death of his father, to portray Vinod's anguish. The film's offbeat music, composed by Hridayanath Mangeshkar, featured popular tracks like Zindagi Aa Raha Hoon Main by Kishore Kumar; Mujhe Tum Yaad Karnaa, by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.
Despite star power and emotional depth, Mashaal was a commercial failure, earning only 25 million rupees against a budget of 29 million. Anil Kapoor won Filmfare's Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Raja.

यश चोपड़ा की महत्वाकाँक्षी एक्शन ड्रामा फ़िल्म मशाल (1984) को सबसे ज़्यादा जिस बात के लिए याद किया जाता है वो है पर्दे पर दिग्गज अभिनेताओं दिलीप कुमार और वहीदा रहमान की सालों बाद बनी जोड़ी। वसंत कनिटकर के मराठी नाटक 'अश्रुंची झाली फूले' पर आधारित इस फ़िल्म को मलयालम भाषा में भी इथिले इनियम वारु शीर्षक से रीमेक किया गया और मलयालम में इसके नायक लोकप्रिय अभिनेता ममूटी थे। वैसे इस मराठी नाटक पर पहले भी एक हिन्दी फ़िल्म, सत्येन बोस के निर्देशन में 1969 में बनी फ़िल्म आँसू बन गए फूल, बन चुकी थी।
