Introduction
Kinare Kinare (1963), directed by Chetan Anand, featured a pivotal role played by the director himself. The film starred Dev Anand and Meena Kumari, who had previously acted together in three other films: Sanam (1951), a romantic drama where Meena Kumari had a supporting role as Suraiya's best friend; Tamasha (1952), a commercially successful film with Dev Anand, Meena Kumari, and Kishore Kumar; and Baadbaan (1954), a star-studded film featuring Ashok Kumar and Usha Kiran among others.
However, Kinare Kinare remains the most memorable of their collaborations. The film tells the story of an ailing woman who unknowingly falls in love with an escaped convict. Despite the interesting premise, the film was a commercial failure due to a somewhat dull screenplay, which led critics to largely pan it. In particular, Chetan Anand's performance was criticized, with many referring to the film as a "lame duck" upon release.
Its only redeeming quality was its music, particularly the title song Kinare Kinare, which remains a classic. The score was composed by the often underrated Pandit Jaidev, with lyrics by Nayaya Sharma. While critics were harsh about the film's quality, they praised its musical compositions, calling them "brilliant." Songs like Aaj Achanak Tut Gaye Kyun, Sulag Uthi Dil Ki Lagi, Jalate Hain Paravaane, and Har Aas Ashq Baar Hai—all sung by Lata Mangeshkar—demonstrated Jaidev's brilliance and diverse range as a composer. Other songs like Jab Gham-e-Ishq Satata Hai (Mukesh), Dekh Li Teri Khudai (Talat Mahmood), Teri Tasveer Bhi Tujh Jaisi (Mohammed Rafi), and Qadamon Men Samaa Ke Paravaane (Asha Bhosle) further showcased the soundtrack's versatility.
However, it's Chale Ja Rahe Hai Kinare Kinare by Manna Dey that continues to be the most beloved track from the film, and remains a favorite to this day.
पर किनारे किनारे देव आनंद और मीना कुमारी की जोड़ी की सबसे प्रमुख फ़िल्म कही जा सकती है। फ़िल्म की कहानी एक अमीर जागीरदार की लड़की नीलू (मीना कुमारी) के इर्द गिर्द घूमती है जो दिल की मरीज़ है। जब फ़रार अपराधी कमल (देव आनंद) नीलू को गुंडों से बचाता है तो नीलू कमल के प्यार में पड़ जाती है। इस फ़िल्म की शुरुआत में बँटवारे के समय की असल दस्तावेज़ी छवियों का इस्तेमाल किया गया था। दिलचस्प कथानक के बावजूद फ़िल्म कुछ हद तक सुस्त पटकथा के चलते व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब नहीं रही। आलोचकों की ओर से भी फ़िल्म को बहुत आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ा। खासकर निर्देशक चेतन आनंद को अपने अभिनय के लिए आलोचना सुननी पड़ी और यहाँ तक कहा गया कि उन्होंने खुद को ज़्यादा फुटेज देने के चक्कर में पूरी फ़िल्म का मज़ा खराब कर दिया।
फ़िल्म की एकमात्र पसंद की गई चीज़ इसका संगीत था। ख़ासकर फ़िल्म का शीर्षक गीत “किनारे किनारे” तो आज भी क्लासिक माना जाता है। फ़िल्म में संगीत पंडित जयदेव ने दिया था और गानों के बोल फ़िल्म के निर्माता न्याय शर्मा ने लिखे थे। फ़िल्म की गुणवत्ता को लेकर भले उसकी कितनी भी आलोचना हुई हो, इसके गीतों को आलोचकों की सराहना मिली और उन्हें शानदार कहा गया। लता मंगेशकर के गाए “आज अचानक टूट गए क्यों”, “सुलग उठी दिल की लगी”, “जलते हैं परवाने” और “हर आस अश्क बार है” जैसे गाने एक संगीतकार के रूप में जयदेव की बहुआयामी प्रतिभा को दिखाते हैं। फ़िल्म के दूसरे गाने जैसे मुकेश का गाया “जब ग़म-ए-इश्क सताता है”, तलत महमूद का गाया “देख ली तेरी ख़ुदाई”, मोहम्मद रफ़ी का गाया “तेरी तस्वीर भी तुझ जैसी” और आशा भोंसले का गाया “कदमों में समा के परवाने” संगीत के बहुमुखी पक्ष को और बेहतर तरीके से दिखाते हैं।
पर इन सबसे ऊपर, मन्ना डे का गाया फ़िल्म का शीर्षक गीत “चले जा रहे हैं किनारे किनारे” आज भी इस फ़िल्म का ऐसा सबसे ज़्यादा चाहा गया गीत बना हुआ है, जिसे भुलाना मुश्किल है।
