Kinare Kinare (1963), directed by Chetan Anand, featured a pivotal role played by the director himself. किनारे किनारे (1963) के निर्देशक चेतन आनंद थे और फ़िल्म में उन्होंने एक महत्वपूर्ण किरदार भी निभाया था। लेखक और गीतकार न्याय शर्मा इस फ़िल्म के निर्माता भी थे। इस फ़िल्म में मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाई थीं देव आनंद और मीना कुमारी ने। वैसे तो वे दोनों किनारे किनारे से पहले भी तीन अन्य फ़िल्मों में साथ काम कर चुके थे। इनमें पहली थी रोमांटिक ड्रामा फ़िल्म सनम (1951) जिसमें मीना कुमारी ने सुरैया की दोस्त की सहायक भूमिका निभाई थी। दूसरी व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब रही फ़िल्म थी तमाशा (1952) जिसमें देव आनंद, मीना कुमारी और किशोर कुमार अभिनेता थे, और तीसरी फ़िल्म थी बादबाँ (1954) जिसमें अशोक कुमार और उषा किरण जैसे सितारों ने अभिनय किया था।
पर किनारे किनारे देव आनंद और मीना कुमारी की जोड़ी की सबसे प्रमुख फ़िल्म कही जा सकती है। फ़िल्म की कहानी एक अमीर जागीरदार की लड़की नीलू (मीना कुमारी) के इर्द गिर्द घूमती है जो दिल की मरीज़ है। जब फ़रार अपराधी कमल (देव आनंद) नीलू को गुंडों से बचाता है तो नीलू कमल के प्यार में पड़ जाती है। इस फ़िल्म की शुरुआत में बँटवारे के समय की असल दस्तावेज़ी छवियों का इस्तेमाल किया गया था। दिलचस्प कथानक के बावजूद फ़िल्म कुछ हद तक सुस्त पटकथा के चलते व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब नहीं रही। आलोचकों की ओर से भी फ़िल्म को बहुत आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ा। खासकर निर्देशक चेतन आनंद को अपने अभिनय के लिए आलोचना सुननी पड़ी और यहाँ तक कहा गया कि उन्होंने खुद को ज़्यादा फुटेज देने के चक्कर में पूरी फ़िल्म का मज़ा खराब कर दिया।
