Introduction

Yash Chopra's Kaala Patthar is a powerful social drama that portrays the harsh realities faced by labourers in India's coal mines, who have always been at the receiving end of vehement exploitation by the hands of capitalist structures. Amitabh Bachchan plays Vijay, a disgraced former sea captain seeking redemption as a coal miner, alongside Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Parveen Babi, Neetu Singh, and Rakhee Gulzar, who deliver stellar performances in the film.

The plot of the film is inspired by the real-life event of the Chasnala mining disaster that took place in 1975, where 375 workers tragically lost their lives due to industrial negligence. Bachchan's prior work experience in the Coal Department of Bird & Company and his firsthand encounters with the dire conditions of Jharkhand's coal mines lend authenticity to the film's depiction of exploitation, unsafe working environments, and the indifference of those in power to amend. Kaala Patthar critiques unchecked capitalism and emphasises the plight of workers trapped in a cycle of poverty and danger, while corrupt elites profit at their expense.

यश चोपड़ा द्वारा निर्देशित काला पत्थर भारत की कोयला खदानों में काम करने वाले मज़दूरों के जीवन की कड़वी हकीकत को उजागर करती है। श्रम के सबसे अन्तिम पायदान पर खड़े ये मज़दूर सदा से ही पूंजीवादी संरचनाओं के हाथों घोर शोषण का शिकार रहे हैं। फ़िल्म में अमिताभ बच्चन एक खदान मज़दूर विजय की भूमिका में हैं। विजय एक समुद्री जहाज़ का कप्तान था, जिसके माथे पर अपने ही जहाज़ को संकट में छोड़कर भागने का बदनुमा दाग़ लगा है। कोयले की खान में काला पत्थर तोड़ते हुए वो जैसे अपनी मुक्ति के इन्तज़ार में है। फ़िल्म में शशि कपूर, शत्रुघ्न सिन्हा, परवीन बॉबी, नीतू सिंह मुख्य भूमिकाओं में हैं और पर्दे पर अमिताभ के साथ जोड़ी के रूप में राखी गुलज़ार का यादगार अभिनय है।

फिल्म का कथानक 1975 में धनबाद के निकट चासनाला में हुई सच्ची खनन दुर्घटना से प्रेरित है। इस त्रासद आपदा में औद्योगिक तंत्र की लापरवाही के चलते 375 श्रमिक काल के गाल में समा गये थे। 'बर्ड एंड कम्पनी' के कोयला विभाग में बच्चन के पहले किये कार्य का अनुभव और उसी दौरान झारखंड की कोयला खदानों की भयावह स्थितियों से उनका प्रत्यक्ष साक्षात्कार फ़िल्म को प्रामाणिकता देनेवाल साबित हुआ। फ़िल्म खदान मज़दूरों के शोषण, काम के दौरान श्रमिकों के लिए बेहद असुरक्षित वातावरण और इसे लेकर सत्ता में बैठे लोगों घोर उदासीनता को सटीक तरीके से दिखाती है। उस दौर के राजनैतिक मानचित्र पर हावी समाजवादी विचार से प्रेरित काला पत्थर की कहानी अनियंत्रित पूंजीवाद की आलोचना पेश करती है बताती है कि कैसे जहाँ एक ओर श्रमिक गरीबी और जोख़िम के चक्र में फंसा है, वहीं भ्रष्ट अभिजात वर्ग उसके खून-पसीने पर लाभ की इमारतें खड़ी कर रहा है।
