Introduction

Jalal Agha (11 July 1945 – 5 March 1995) He was a distinguished Indian actor and director whose career spanned more than three decades in Hindi cinema. The son of the celebrated comedian and character actor Agha, Jalal Agha inherited a natural flair for performance, which he refined through formal training at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.

He made an early and memorable screen appearance as a child actor, portraying the young Prince Jehangir in K. Asif's timeless epic Mughal-e-Azam (1960), a role later played by Dilip Kumar in adulthood. His transition to adult roles came with K.A. Abbas's Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Mein (1967). From the late 1960s to the early 1990s, Agha appeared in over 60 Hindi films, earning recognition for his nuanced supporting performances.

His most iconic screen moment remains his appearance in Ramesh Sippy's blockbuster Sholay (1975), where he featured as the banjo-playing singer in the evergreen R. D. Burman–sung song Mehbooba O' Mehbooba, performed alongside Helen. Other notable performances include Julie's silent lover in Julie (1975), the singer in Sama Hai Suhana Suhana from Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1988), Shabana Azmi's brother in Thodi Si Bewafai (1980), Amol Palekar's friend in Gharonda (1977), and Naseeruddin Shah's companion in Dil Akhir Dil Hai (1982). He also played a significant role in Abbas–Mustan's ensemble film Saat Hindustani (1969).

Agha headlined Abbas's Do Boond Pani 1971 opposite Simi Garewal and Madhu Chanda. Despite acclaimed music by Jaidev and winning the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, the film did not achieve commercial success. His international credits included Bombay Talkie, Gandhi, Kim, and The Deceivers. In 1989, he wrote and directed the Hindi film Goonj.

Jalal Agha passed away from a heart attack on 5 March 1995 at the age of 49. His final screen appearance came posthumously in Badmaash (1998). He remains fondly remembered for his distinctive screen presence and, above all, for his unforgettable musical performance in Mehbooba O' Mehbooba.
