Film TitleJalsaghar (The Music Room), 1958, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionIn the early twentieth-century, a Bengali zamindar (landowner) Biswambhar Roy is living alone with a steward and a servant, with his palace and the riches in decline having withdrawn from the world after the demise of his wife and son, four years ago. A great patron of music, known for holding eminent mehfils (gatherings) at his palace, Biswambhar is reminded of the day he held a public concert at his music room to celebrate the coming-of-age ceremony of his only son Khoka.
The scene cuts to a slightly younger Biswambhar being informed that the Bank is unable to cover more loans for the properties he has listed at the Bank to afford such elaborate concerts and gatherings. (1/6)
