Scene Description In the early twentieth-century, a Bengali zamindar (landowner) Biswambhar Roy is living alone with a steward and a servant, with his palace and the riches in decline having withdrawn from the world after the demise of his wife and son, four years ago. A great patron of music, known for holding eminent mehfils (gatherings) at his palace, Biswambhar is reminded of the day he held a public concert at his music room to celebrate the coming-of-age ceremony of his only son Khoka._x000d_ The scene cuts to a slightly younger Biswambhar being informed that the Bank is unable to cover more loans for the properties he has listed at the Bank to afford such elaborate concerts and gatherings.(1/6)
