Char Dil Char Rahen (1959), directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, starred the two brothers Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor, along with Ajit Khan, Meena Kumari, Nimmi, and Kumkum. Based on a novel of the same name, the film was a socially conscious narrative woven through the stories of three men waiting at a symbolic crossroads—for love, purpose, and redemption. The plot follows Govinda (Raj Kapoor), Dilwar (Ajit), and Johnny (Shammi Kapoor), each awaiting their beloved. चार दिल चार राहें (1959) का निर्देशन ख़्वाजा अहमद अब्बास ने किया था। इस फ़िल्म में असल ज़िन्दगी में एक-दूसरे के भाई राज कपूर और शम्मी कपूर पर्दे पर मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे और उनके साथ अजीत, मीना कुमारी, निम्मी और कुमकुम भी प्रमुख किरदारों में थे। इसी नाम से लिखे गए उपन्यास पर आधारित इस फ़िल्म की कहानी भी ख़्वाजा अहमद अब्बास की दूसरी फ़िल्मों की तरह सामाजिक चेतना से ओत-प्रोत थी। इसमें तीन किरदारों की समांतर चलती कहानियों के ज़रिए जीवन में प्रेम, उसके उद्देश्य और मुक्ति की तलाश को ज़िन्दगी के एक प्रतीकात्मक चौराहे पर एक-दूसरे से मिलते दिखाया गया है। फ़िल्म की कहानी गोविंदा (राज कपूर), दिलावर (अजीत) और जॉनी (शम्मी कपूर) के किरदारों के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। इन तीनों को अपनी-अपनी प्रेमिकाओं की प्रतीक्षा है। गोविंदा को तथाकथित निम्न जाति से आनेवाली लड़की छवि (मीना कुमारी) से प्यार है, लेकिन छवि को गाँव से निष्कासित कर दिया जाता है। लेकिन गोविन्दा अब भी आशावान है और चौराहे पर उसका इंतज़ार करता है। दिलावर एक नवाब के चंगुल से प्यारी (निम्मी) नामक लड़की को बचाता है। लेकिन प्यारी अपनी माँ को साथ लिए बिना उसके साथ जाने से मना कर देती है और उसके इंतज़ार में वहीं दुकान खोल लेती है। उसे आस है कि...
