Introduction

Bairaag (1976) holds a unique place in Hindi cinema as Dilip Kumar's only film where he played a triple role, portraying a father and his twin sons. This family drama thriller, directed by Asit Sen and produced by Mushir Riaz, also boasted the collaboration of three of the finest writers in Hindi cinema—Abrar Alvi, S. Khalil and Rahi Masoom Raza. Despite the star power of Dilip Kumar, the film is primarily remembered as his last leading role, after which he took a significant five-year hiatus from acting. Following this, Kumar shifted to character roles, marking a distinct phase in his illustrious career.

The film featured two top female stars, his offscreen wife Saira Banu and Leena Chandavarkar, as the romantic leads opposite him. With such a stellar cast, expectations from Bairaag were high, especially given the emotional weight and family-centric storyline. The music, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, was another highlight, with songs like "Chhoti Si Umar Mein Hi Lag Gaya Rog" and "Peete Peete Kabhi Kabhi Yun Jaam Badal Jaate Hai" becoming popular hits. These melodious tracks resonated with the audience, contributing to the film's musical appeal.

Despite these strengths, Bairaag unfortunately did not fare well at the box-office. The film's failure is often attributed to its over-the-top drama and melodrama, which may not have connected with the audience as anticipated. Moreover, the shift in the nature of Dilip Kumar's roles post-Bairaag likely added to the sense of a 'final act' of an era, further dimming the film's long-term impact. Nonetheless, Bairaag remains a significant entry in Dilip Kumar's career, marking the end of his reign as the quintessential leading man in Bombay films and the beginning of a new phase in his acting journey.
