Introduction
Babul (1950), directed by S.U. Sunny, is a significant Hindi film musical drama that played a crucial role in shaping Dilip Kumar's image as the ill-fated lover. Produced by Naushad, who also composed the music, the film is remembered for its deeply emotional narrative and its exploration of complex relationships. फ़िल्म की कहानी अशोक (दिलीप कुमार) नामक किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। अशोक एक गाँव में पोस्टमास्टर है। परिस्थितियाँ कुछ ऐसी बनती हैं कि अशोक खुद को दो बहुत ही अलग स्वभाव और तबीयत की स्त्रियों के प्रेम में घिरा हुआ पाता है। ये दो स्त्रियाँ हैं: सीधी-साधी सी लड़की बेला (नर्गिस) और पढ़ी-लिखी दौलतमंद स्त्री उषा (मुनव्वर सुल्ताना)। अशोक नए ज़माने का नायक है। नवजागरण की चेतना से भरा, सौम्य, सुसंस्कृत और बीए जैसी उच्च शिक्षा हासिल। इसके साथ-साथ उसमें चित्रकला, कविता लेखन, गायन और पियानो बजाने जैसी कलात्मक प्रतिभाएँ भी मौजूद हैं। उसके व्यक्तित्व को दोनों नायिकाओं के सामने रखें तो उनमें फ़र्क साफ़ नज़र आता है - बेला की सादगी उसे औरों से अलग बनाती है तो उषा का बनाव-सिंगार। पर इन भिन्नताओं के बावजूद ये दोनों नायिकाएँ अशोक के प्यार में पड़ जाती हैं। फ़िल्म इन दोनों स्त्रियों के जज़्बाती प्रेम के मध्य झूलते, भावनात्मक और नैतिक दुविधाओं में उलझे हमारे नायक अशोक की कहानी है।
यह फ़िल्म एक कोरा प्रेम त्रिकोण होने भर से कहीं आगे जाती है; यह वफ़ादारी, प्रेम और उसमें चयन से उपजते सवालों में गहरे उतरती है। अशोक की भीतरी उथल-पुथल, बेला और उषा के साथ उसके उलझे रिश्तों से उपजी जटिलताएँ इस फ़िल्म की कहानी का केन्द्रीय हिस्सा गढ़ते हैं।
बाबुल की सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी ने खूब तारीफ़ें बटोरीं। 'फ़िल्मइंडिया' मैगज़ीन ने इसे “दीवानावार खूबसूरत” तक कहा और फ़िल्म के सिनेमैटोग्राफ़र फ़ली मिस्त्री की कला की तुलना किसी चित्रकार के ब्रशस्ट्रोक से कर डाली। मैगज़ीन ने लिखा कि जैसे फ़िल्म का हर फ़्रेम एक खूबसूरत कलाकृति सरीख़ा है। मिस्त्री के कैमरे का परदे पर जादू ऐसा था कि इस भावनाओं से भरी कथा को उसने जैसे खूबसूरत सितारों से जड़ा एक दुशाला ओढ़ा दिया।
दमदार अभिनय और यादगार संगीत से सजी बाबुल ने बॉक्स ऑफ़िस पर सफलता के झंडे गाड़ दिये। यह साल 1950 की दूसरी सबसे ज्यादा कमाई करने वाली फ़िल्म थी, जिसने करीब 1 करोड़ 25 लाख रुपये का व्यापार किया और 7 लाख रुपए का शुद्ध लाभ कमाया। बाबुल की व्यावसायिक सफलता ने दिलीप कुमार को हिन्दी सिनेमा के शीर्ष सितारों में से एक के रूप में स्थापित कर दिया और बाबुल उनके अभिनय करियर में एक मील का पत्थर बन गई।
इस फिल्म को अभिनेत्री उमा देवी के हास्य भूमिका में पदार्पण के लिये भी याद रखा जाता है। उमा देवी, जिन्हें सिनेमा की दुनिया 'टुन टुन' के नाम से जानती है। टुन टुन ने फ़िल्म में अपनी हास्य भूमिका से कई हल्के-फुल्के मज़ाकिया प्रसंग रचे, जिसने इस जज़्बातों से भरी कहानी को साँस लेने का मौका दिया और उसमें भावनाओं के नए रंग भरे।
