Introduction

Sonar Kella (1974) Released internationally as The Golden Fortress, the film is a masterful cinematic adaptation of the mystery novel by legendary Bengali writer and filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Marking the screen debut of Ray's iconic detective Feluda, the film stars Soumitra Chatterjee as the astute sleuth, alongside Santosh Dutta, Siddartha Chatterjee, and Kushal Chakraborty. It was the first in Ray's celebrated Feluda series and was later followed by Joi Baba Felunath (The Elephant God).
The film's ensemble cast also includes notable performances by Kamu Mukherjee, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Haradhan Banerjee, Shailen Mukherjee, Ajoy Banerjee, Bishnupada Rudrapaul, Santanu Bagchi, Bimal Chatterjee, and Ashok Mukherjee.
The story unfolds as private detective Feluda and his young cousin Topshe are enlisted by a concerned father to protect his six-year-old son, Mukul Dhar. A prodigious child haunted by vivid recollections of a past life, Mukul claims to have once lived in a "Golden Fortress" adorned with priceless gems. His strange visions—sketches of peacocks, camels, and a radiant fort capture public imagination, prompting a journey to Rajasthan in search of the truth, accompanied by a parapsychologist. As mystery and danger deepen, Feluda must unravel the threads connecting past and present.
Sonar Kella garnered widespread acclaim and was the recipient of several major honours. At the 1974 National Film Awards, it won Best Screenplay, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Child Artist, and Best Feature Film in Bengali. That same year, it was recognised by the Government of West Bengal with awards for Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Screenplay. In 1975, the film achieved international recognition, winning Best Feature Film for Children and Young Adults at the Tehran International Film Festival.
A landmark in Indian cinema, Sonar Kella remains a timeless blend of suspense, intellect, and cinematic brilliance.

The prelude to the film introduces us to mysterious case of a little boy, Mukul who gets up at night and starts drawing pictures of unknown lands, sandy hills and palaces that possibly relate to his previous life. He remembers a golden fortress, colourful gemstones and wars fought with swords, bows and arrows. Mukul's parents are concerned about his irrate behaviour. He keeps drawing, talking about a past life and never smiles.
Mukul a young boy , is haunted by memories of his previous life. He is taken to Dr. Hajra, a parapsychologist for treatment. The doctor discovers some drawings made by Mukul that represent scenes from the past. It emerges that events had taken place in a fortress where the boy's father had worked as a gem cutter. The doctor believes that a fortress in the drawings may be located in Rajasthan and decides to take the boy on a trip there in the hope that this might provide a cure. Alerted to this strange phenomenon by newspaper reports, some bandits kidnap Mukul in the hope of laying their hands on what they believe is treasure. Meanwhile, Felu the detective is engaged along with his assistant Tapesh to recover the child. Based on his own novel, Ray's The Golden Fortress is an exciting and fun-filled journey, and a thriller for people of all ages.
