Introduction

Shakti (1982) Directed by Ramesh Sippy, written by the celebrated screenwriting duo Salim–Javed, and produced by Mushir-Riaz, it occupies a distinguished position in the history of Hindi cinema. The film features an exceptional ensemble cast comprising Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee Gulzar, Smita Patil, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Amrish Puri. It is particularly significant as the first and only film to bring together Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, two of Indian cinema's most influential actors, in leading roles. Widely regarded as a cinematic classic, Shakti received four Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, and Best Actor for Dilip Kumar. The narrative was inspired by the Tamil film Thangappathakkam.
The film centres on the tragic relationship between the principled police officer Ashwini Kumar (Dilip Kumar) and his estranged son Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan). Their conflict originates when Ashwini refuses to negotiate with kidnappers despite the threat to his son's life, choosing professional ethics over personal attachment. Deeply scarred by this incident, Vijay grows up harbouring resentment towards his father and eventually becomes involved with an organised crime syndicate. The narrative culminates in a poignant confrontation as Ashwini is assigned to dismantle the criminal network, compelling father and son to confront one another on opposite sides of the law before achieving a tragic reconciliation.
The role of Vijay was initially offered to Raj Babbar, who had accepted the project, but he was replaced after Amitabh Bachchan expressed interest in the character. Rakhee Gulzar later recalled that she had been cautioned against portraying Bachchan's mother, as it might negatively affect her career. Nevertheless, she readily accepted the role, valuing the opportunity to perform alongside Dilip Kumar.
The film's soundtrack, composed by R. D. Burman with lyrics by Anand Bakshi, complements its emotionally charged narrative through its evocative melodies. Notable songs include Jane Kaise Kab Kahan, Hamne Sanam Ko Khat Likha, Ae Aasman Bata, and Mangi Thi Ek Dua, each contributing significantly to the film's emotional and dramatic texture.
Although Shakti earned approximately ₹8 crore at the box office and ranked among the highest-grossing Hindi films of its period, its substantial production costs resulted in only moderate commercial returns.
Nevertheless, it achieved enduring critical acclaim. Both Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan received Filmfare Award nominations for Best Actor, with Kumar securing the award, while Bachchan received three nominations in the same category that year.

शक्ति' (1982) फ़िल्म रमेश सिप्पी की डायरेक्ट की हुई, मशहूर पटकथा लेखक जोड़ी सलीम-जावेद की लिखी और मुशीर रियाज़ की प्रोड्यूस की हुई है। हिंदी सिनेमा के इतिहास में एक ख़ास जगह रखती है। इस फ़िल्म में दिलीप कुमार, अमिताभ बच्चन, राखी गुलज़ार, स्मिता पाटिल, कुलभूषण खरबंदा और अमरीश पुरी जैसे बेहतरीन कलाकारों की टोली है। यह फ़िल्म इसलिए भी बहुत अहम है क्योंकि इसमें भारतीय सिनेमा के दो सबसे असरदार एक्टर दिलीप कुमार और अमिताभ बच्चन पहली और आख़िरी बार मुख्य भूमिकाओं में साथ नज़र आए। एक क्लासिक फ़िल्म मानी जाने वाली 'शक्ति' को चार फ़िल्मफ़ेयर अवॉर्ड मिले, जिनमें बेस्ट फ़िल्म, बेस्ट स्क्रीनप्ले, बेस्ट साउंड एडिटिंग और दिलीप कुमार के लिए बेस्ट एक्टर का अवॉर्ड शामिल है। इसकी कहानी तमिल फ़िल्म 'थंगापथाक्कम' से प्रेरित थी।
यह फ़िल्म एक उसूलपसंद पुलिस अफ़सर अश्विनी कुमार (दिलीप कुमार) और उनके अलग हो चुके बेटे विजय (अमिताभ बच्चन) के रिश्ते पर आधारित है। उनके बीच टकराव तब शुरू होता है जब अश्विनी अपने बेटे की जान को ख़तरा होने के बावजूद किडनैपर्स से बातचीत करने से इनकार कर देते हैं और निजी लगाव के बजाय अपने काम के उसूलों को चुनते हैं। इस घटना से गहरे सदमे में आए विजय के मन में अपने पिता के प्रति नफ़रत घर कर जाती है और वह आगे चलकर एक संगठित अपराध गिरोह से जुड़ जाता है। कहानी एक मार्मिक टकराव पर ख़त्म होती है जब अश्विनी को उस आपराधिक नेटवर्क को ख़त्म करने का काम सौंपा जाता है, जिससे पिता और बेटे को कानून में आमने-सामने खड़ा होना पड़ता है और आख़िर में उनका मिलन होता है।
विजय का रोल शुरू में राज बब्बर को ऑफ़र किया गया था और उन्होंने इसे मंज़ूर भी कर लिया था, लेकिन अमिताभ बच्चन के इस किरदार में दिलचस्पी दिखाने के बाद उन्हें हटा दिया गया। राखी गुलज़ार ने बाद में बताया कि उन्हें बच्चन की माँ का रोल न करने की सलाह दी गई थी, क्योंकि इससे उनके करियर पर बुरा असर पड़ सकता था। फ़िर भी, उन्होंने दिलीप कुमार के साथ काम करने के मौके को अहमियत देते हुए ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी यह रोल स्वीकार कर लिया।
फ़िल्म का संगीत आर. डी. बर्मन ने तैयार किया था और गाने आनंद बख़्शी ने लिखे थे। इसके दिल को छू लेने वाले संगीत ने फ़िल्म की भावुक कहानी को और असरदार बना दिया। फ़िल्म के यादगार गानों में 'जाने कैसे कब कहाँ', 'हमने सनम को ख़त लिखा', 'ऐ आसमान बता' और 'मांगी थी एक दुआ' शामिल हैं, जो फ़िल्म के भावुक और नाटकीय माहौल को बनाने में अहम भूमिका निभाते हैं।
हालांकि 'शक्ति' ने बॉक्स ऑफ़िस पर लगभग ₹8 करोड़ कमाए और उस दौर की सबसे ज़्यादा कमाई करने वाली हिंदी फ़िल्मों में शामिल रही, लेकिन इसकी भारी प्रोडक्शन लागत के कारण इसे औसत व्यावसायिक सफलता ही मिली। इसके बावजूद, इसे आलोचकों से बहुत तारीफ़ मिली। दिलीप कुमार और अमिताभ बच्चन दोनों को 'बेस्ट एक्टर' के लिए फ़िल्मफ़ेयर अवॉर्ड नॉमिनेशन मिले, जबकि उसी साल बच्चन को इसी कैटेगरी में तीन नॉमिनेशन मिले।
