Introduction
Saudagar (1991) directed by Subhash Ghai, it featured two legends of Hindi cinema, Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar, in lead roles. This marked their second collaboration after the 1959 film Paigham. The film also introduced Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala in their debut performances, with Koirala later rising to prominence as a renowned Bollywood actress. Alongside these actors, the film boasted a stellar supporting cast, including Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Mukesh Khanna, Dalip Tahil, Gulshan Grover, Dina Pathak, and Jackie Shroff.
The story revolves around a long-standing blood feud between two clan chiefs: Veer Singh (played by Dilip Kumar) and his rival Rajeshwar Singh Thakur (played by Raaj Kumar). This feud has persisted for decades, but it takes a new turn when their grandchildren, Radha Singh Thakur (Manisha Koirala) and Vasudev Singh (Vivek Mushran), fall in love. This conflict echoes the themes of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with Anupam Kher's character, Mandhaari, acting as a parallel to Friar Laurence.
The film's music was composed by the legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Songs like Ilu Ilu, sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh, and Manhar Udhas, and Imli Ka Boota, performed by Mohammed Aziz, Sudesh Bhosle, and later in a different version by Sadhana Sargam, Mohammed Aziz, and Udit Narayan, became cult classics. These tracks remain popular with audiences to this day.
Saudagar was a commercial success, running for 25 weeks (a "silver jubilee") in theaters across India. It became the third highest-grossing Indian film of 1991 and was among the top 10 highest-grossing films of the 1990s. The film earned eight nominations at the 37th Filmfare Awards, winning two—Best Director for Subhash Ghai and Best Editing for Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali.
For Dilip Kumar, Saudagar was his penultimate film and his final box-office hit before his death in 2021.
