फ़िल्म की कहानी खानदानों के बीच पीढ़ियों से चले आ रही खूनी अदावत के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। एक ओर वीर सिंह (दिलीप कुमार) का खानदान है तो दूसरी ओर ठाकुर राजेश्वर सिंह (राज कुमार) का। बचपन के दोस्तों के बीच छिड़ी इस पीढ़ियों की जंग तब नया मोड़ लेती है जब इन दोनों खानदानों के मुखियाओं के पोते-पोती राधा (मनीषा कोइराला) और वासु (विवेक मुश्रान) एक दूसरे से प्यार कर बैठते हैं।

फिल्म में संगीत महान जोड़ी लक्ष्मीकांत-प्यारेलाल का था और गीतों के बोल आनंद बख्शी ने लिखे थे। फ़िल्म में कविता कृष्णमूर्ति, उदित नारायण, सुखविंदर सिंह और मनहर उधास का गाया "इलू इलू" गीत और मोहम्मद अज़ीज़, सुदेश भोंसले का गाया "इमली का बूटा" तो क्लासिक गीत बन गए और खूब पसन्द किए गए। “इमली का बूटा” गीत का एक दूसरा रूप फ़िल्म में साधना सरगम, मोहम्मद अज़ीज़ और उदित नारायण की आवाज़ में भी था। आज भी ये गीत दर्शकों के बीच लोकप्रिय हैं।
