Introduction
Paying Guest (1957) is a Bollywood romance drama written by Nasir Hussain and directed by Subodh Mukherjee, starring Dev Anand and Nutan, with Shubha Khote in a supporting role.
The story centers around Ramesh (Dev Anand), an incompetent lawyer who is evicted from his home. In an attempt to secure accommodation, he disguises himself as an elderly man. Ramesh also falls in love with Shanti (Nutan), the daughter of the house's owner. As the plot unfolds, Ramesh faces numerous life-changing challenges, while his playful romance with Shanti provides light -hearted moments.
The film, which runs for about two and a half hours, includes several digressions that add to its charm. For example, Shanti's best friend, Chanchal (Shubha Khote), marries a wealthy barrister, Dayal (Gajanan Jagirdar), who is much older than her. After their marriage, Chanchal becomes Shanti's neighbour. Unhappy with her own marital life, Chanchal grows jealous of the blossoming love between Shanti and Ramesh. Their cheerful exchanges add a fun dynamic to the narrative.
The film includes delightful debates between characters that may seem trivial or silly but are skilfully woven into the story. The plot itself, while light, focuses on the charming courtship between two witty individuals, leading to moments of amusing interplay that captivate the audience.
The film's soundtrack, composed by Sachin Dev Burman, became quite popular and left a lasting impression. The lyrics, penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri, contributed to the film's success. Paying Guest marked the second hit film for the team of Mukherjee, Hussain, Dev Anand, and S. D. Burman, who had previously collaborated on the successful Munimji (1955). The film features memorable romantic songs such as "Chand Phir Nikla," "Mana Janab Ne Pukara," "Chhod Do Aanchal, Zamana Kya Kahega," and "O Nigahen Mastana, Dekh Sama Hai Suhana." Like many productions by Nasir Hussain and Subodh Mukherjee, the songs from Paying Guest have retained their timeless appeal.
