Introduction

Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978) is a gripping action-packed emotional crime drama, produced and directed by Prakash Mehra, and written by Kader Khan, Vijay Kaul, and Laxmikant Sharma. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna, it became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of the year. This film marked the fifth collaboration between Bachchan and Mehra, with Raakhee and Rekha playing key roles, while Ranjeet and Amjad Khan had pivotal appearances. Nirupa Roy and Kader Khan also made special appearances. The plot draws heavy inspiration from Sharat Chandra Chatterjee's Devdas, a novel that has been adapted by several filmmakers, and bears resemblance to the French play Cyrano de Bergerac.

The film follows the life of an orphan, Sikandar (Amitabh Bachchan), who rises from working in a wealthy man's household to becoming a notorious bounty hunter. Its emotional and action-packed narrative captivated audiences and made it the biggest Diwali blockbuster at the time, and the third highest-grossing Indian film of the decade after Sholay (1975) and Bobby (1973). Produced on a budget of ₹10 million, it grossed ₹170 million in India and was a significant overseas success, especially in the Soviet Union.

At the 26th Filmfare Awards, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar was nominated for nine awards, including Best Film, but did not win any. Despite this, its remarkable soundtrack by Kalyanji–Anandji, along with memorable lyrics by Anjaan and Prakash Mehra, was a standout feature. The Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhosle duet Salaam-e-Ishq, filmed on Rekha and Bachchan, remains iconic, while Kishore Kumar's Rote Huye Aate Hain Sab continues to resonate with audiences.

The film was later remade in Telugu as Prema Tarangalu (1980) and in Tamil as Amara Kaaviyam (1981). Muqaddar Ka Sikandar remains a classic, cementing Bachchan and Khanna's legendary collaboration in Bollywood.
