Introduction

Leader (1964) is a political drama film directed by Ram Mukherjee, produced by Sashadhar Mukherjee, and written by Dilip Kumar. The film starred Vyjayanthimala and Jayant. Despite its unique theme, which was expected to be commercially successful by the production house Filmalaya, the film performed only moderately at the box office. It is often regarded as one of the first mainstream Hindi films to tackle political themes.

At nearly three hours long, Leader saw Dilip Kumar break away from his established romantic hero image to portray Vijay Khanna, a law graduate and tabloid editor. Set against the backdrop of general elections, Vijay falls in love with Princess Sunita (Vyjayanthimala). However, their romance takes a dark turn when Vijay is accused of murdering a political leader. As the story unfolds, the two protagonists work together to uncover a criminal-politician nexus, which becomes the central conflict of the film.

What worked in the film's favor was its music, composed by Naushad, with lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni. Several songs, especially the patriotic anthem Apni Azaadi Ko Hum Hargiz Mita Sakte Nahin and Mujhe Duniyawalon Sharabi Na Samjho, both sung by Mohammad Rafi, resonated with the youth and the political climate of post-independence India. At a time when there was considerable media attention surrounding the sibling rivalry between playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, both vocalists showcased their remarkable talents, each bringing her unique style to the film's soundtrack. Notable songs include Aaj Hai Pyar Ka Faisla, sung by Lata Mangeshkar, and Daiya Re Daiya, sung by Asha Bhosle, solidifying their reputations as two of the most iconic voices in Indian playback singing. Mohammad Rafi's distinctive vocal style also shone through in tracks like Hameen Se Mohabbat, his duet with Lata in Tere Husn Ki Kya Tareef Karoon, and the Raag Lalit-based Ek Shahenshah Ne Banwake Haseen Tajmahal, an ode to the Taj Mahal in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The film was directed by Ram Mukherjee, whose father, Ravindramohan Mukherjee, was a co-founder of Filmalaya Studios. Ravindramohan also directed several successful films, including Hum Hindustani, Sambandh, and Ek Baar Muskaro Do. Notably, Ram Mukherjee's daughter, Rani Mukerji, became one of the most successful actresses in Hindi cinema.
