Introduction

Jalsaghar (The Music Room, 1958) A haunting elegy to a vanishing world, Jalsaghar stands as the fourth feature film by legendary Bengali auteur Satyajit Ray, adapted from a short story by Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay. Set against the dimming light of aristocracy, the film unfolds within the crumbling opulence of Nimtita Rajbari, located near Murshidabad, a palace whose faded grandeur mirrors the soul of its protagonist.
Chhabi Biswas, in a performance both regal and ravaged, inhabits the role of Zamindar Biswambhar Roy, a nobleman clinging to the final vestiges of wealth, dignity, and a time-honored tradition of music. With each passing day, his fortune erodes, but Roy remains steadfast, almost defiant, in his devotion to his grand music room, a sanctum where masterful musicians and dancers once elevated sound to spirit.
The ensemble cast includes Gangapada Basu as Mahim Ganguly, the ambitious, nouveau-riche neighbour; Padma Devi as Mahamaya, Roy's quietly enduring wife; Pinaki Sengupta as Khoka, Roy's son; Tulsi Lahiri, Kali Sarkar, Roshan Kumari, and Begum Akhtar round out a supporting cast enriched with subtlety and grace. Interwoven into the narrative are exquisite musical interludes by India's greats: Bismillah Khan's shehnai sings of longing, Waheed Khan's surbahar echoes through time and Salamat Ali Khan's khayal reaches transcendent heights.
After the commercial disappointment of Aparajito, Ray sought to marry popular Bengali literature with classical Indian art forms, crafting a cinematic requiem that would speak to the soul of his culture. Though the real palace lacked the necessary grandeur, Ray built an opulent replica in Kolkata and shaped the film's sonic landscape in collaboration with sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan, yielding a score as restrained as it is sublime.
Initially met with a lukewarm reception in India, Jalsaghar quietly collected honours: Presidential Award for Best Film in New Delhi; Best Music at the first Moscow International Film Festival; National Film Awards (1959): Second Best Feature Film in India and Best Bengali Feature Film.
As its reach extended westward in the 1960s, critical tides shifted. The film was embraced by cinematic luminaries such as Pauline Kael, Bosley Crowther, Roger Ebert and Werner Herzog who praised its melancholic beauty and meditative power. Ray himself had doubted its international appeal; instead, it became a cornerstone of his global legacy.
Subsequently, its reverberations continued: ranked #20 on Cahiers du Cinéma's 2008 “100 Best Films;” appeared in Sight & Sound polls (1992; 2002, 2012); listed by the British Film Institute among its 360 Classics; placed #3 on The Daily Star's list of greatest short story adaptations (2021); Reached #7 and #18 in Asia-focused film rankings from Cinemaya and Busan International Film Festival respectively.
In 1981, the film became a surprise box office success in France, selling over 173,000 tickets, unmatched by an Indian film there until Salaam Bombay! in 1988. A soundtrack album was released in 1989 by Ocora–RadioFrance/Harmonia Mundi, featuring insights from an interview with Ray by Andrew Robinson.
In 1996, the Academy Film Archive preserved Jalsaghar, recognizing it not only as an artefact of cinematic excellence but as a timeless meditation on legacy, pride, and the inevitable erosion of grandeur.
Today, Jalsaghar stands not merely as a film, but as a chambered echo space where music, memory, and melancholy swirl like dust in a sunlit room, long abandoned, yet never forgotten.

In the early twentieth-century, a Bengali zamindar (landowner) Biswambhar Roy is living alone with a steward and a servant, with his palace and the riches in decline having withdrawn from the world after the demise of his wife and son, four years ago. A great patron of music, known for holding eminent mehfils (gatherings) at his palace, Biswambhar is reminded of the day he held a public concert at his music room to celebrate the coming-of-age ceremony of his only son Khoka. The scene cuts to a slightly younger Biswambhar being informed that the Bank is unable to cover more loans for the properties he has listed at the Bank to afford such elaborate concerts and gatherings.
